I had a very similar situation at a light. I was a block away from the light that had turned green, and proceeded to not really slow down (35/ 40 mph). Out of nowhere comes a car from the left at high speed. I slammed on the breaks and just barely missed him. I think my heart rate was up for the next two hours! He was trying to get into a Chipotle. That would have been one very expensive/ very average burrito. ?

Glad you are OK.

I always look both ways before proceeding to see if there is a threat. I don't generally wait 1-2 seconds unless there is a threat.

Hard to tell from the video how long the OP waited, but it does seem like the Acura was pretty far away.

Usually when someone runs a red light its right after it turns red and they're just being a-holes. Less frequently its a failing of the human brain where it just doesn't register it. One day when I was a kid my mom came home mad at herself because she blew right through a red light. Luckily no one hit her, but she was shaken by the fact that she just didn't register it.

You can clearly see the vehicle in the right lane stop at the light between 11 and 12 seconds in the video and the Rivian start almost 2 seconds later. Would like to see the front view to see what the time stamp is of the green light but that other car was fully stopped for 4 seconds before the Acura passed it.

Typically the timing on a yellow light is 3 seconds and 1 second for every 10 miles over 30 mph. A red light depending on size of intersection is usually delayed between 2 and 5 seconds before turning green when the opposing light turns red. Looks like there was enough of a delay where OP should not be considered partially at fault for proceeding before it was safe.

I was waiting at a red light, then proceeded straight after it turned green when a kid driving a black Acura blew through his red light. I tried to stop, but he hit the front of my R1T, bounced into a concrete highway divider, flipped, and took down a traffic light post. No airbags deployed in my car, two in the Acura. The kid was a little banged up and was taken to the hospital as a precaution, but I think he’ll be fine. I’m fine, but sadly my beloved Rivian isn’t. The cameras automatically recorded it as an “Incident”.

I’m not looking forward to the insurance and repair process.

Also glad no one was seriously injured, Rivian R1T top rated safety plus pick gives us a little more confidence driving around as our trucks can be repaired or replaced but our bodies not so easily.

I got hit with minor damage nearly 2 weeks ago, their insurance has barely started the process, the body shop that’s rivian approved told me expect to wait 3 months for repairs and expect their insurance to fight all the costs. Needless to say I’m not looking forward to the process and I’m thankful my damage is just the body rear driver quarter behind the rear wheel. They said expect $7k in damages

I'm thinking once the insurance companies realize how expensive Rivians are to repair we will all get whacked on the premiums!

Most important thing is everyone is okay. Metal can be replaced, people can't. That said, good luck with the repairs and hope you're back behind your Rivian soon!

Traffic lights in the Portland metro reason have a slight delay between one set turning red and the other set turning green. That means, for a brief moment, that all lights at an intersection are red. Seems like a good idea in light of what happened to John B.
Delay is standard DOT. Have you been anywhere in the country where there isn't a delay?

Maybe, maybe not. Rivian's have also been super safe in all of these accidents. It seems that everyone here has walked away unhurt and all their passengers were also unhurt. Medical costs are way more expensive than vehicle repairs.

I don't understand the argument and have seen it in a few places. Rivian is safe occupants, not others. PIP limits to occupants are usually low and optional. I think the most I saw was 10k.

Having said that, rear damage is usually other party's fault. Front damage is not crazy expensive.

The video shows about a two second delay between the light turning green and my car starting through the intersection. It’s difficult to see on a phone, but easily visible on a larger monitor. I’m thankful the cameras recorded the incident, but I’m unable to download it to a USB stick, which is why I recorded it playing on the dash with my phone. The artifact of the car skipping at the end is a result of the impact. All of the cameras no longer work. A/C doesn’t work either and is leaking refrigerant. The truck no longer charges as well and has been flatbeded to the nearest Rivian approved repair facility. Fingers crossed for a speedy return of my truck. I miss it already.

We have delayed green traffic lights here, and this intersection has a delay. The kid just blew through the red and actually told the police he didn’t see it until it was too late.

Overall, I’m thankful nobody was really hurt. This could have worked out very differently.
