Found this article today. I thought it would be simply announcing a new RAN at Hailey, ID.

But it mentioned these two interesting tidbits by Rivian spokeswoman Chelsea Williams:

- “She noted that DC (direct-current) fast chargers will have output voltages up to 1,000 volts, meaning drivers could add up to 200 miles of range in 15 minutes.”

- “And, next summer, Rivian hopes to roll out adapters allowing previous version owners to connect to Tesla’s Supercharger network”

Are RANs getting a big upgrade to be able to output at 1,000V?

I guess we have a rough timeline by when we should expect NACS adapters.

Let’s just say that I don’t trust Ms. Emily Jones of the Idaho Mountian Express for technical guidance and interpretation.
Can current RANs deliver 200 miles of range in 15 minutes? AFAIK, it can’t on the 400V system. So, that’s why I’m considering this statement twice.

Alongside rumors of 800v pack coming out next year, this RAN news would seem to possibly corroborate.

Pretty sure the capability is already there on the RAN side.

Can the cables and connectors handle 1000V? I was under the impression there were limits on not only CCS but NACS

Rivian has advertised 300kW+ charging speeds on their website since day one, so updating RAN output isn't surprising, nor would a switch to 800v be for the R1 platform.

A tad disappointed to hear that they are targeting "next summer" for the adapter rollout. That could easily turn into "this time next year" if they aren't careful.

"The proposed Rivian charging station would resemble a small gas station, with credit card readers and pumps."

Wire size does NOT determine what voltage can run across it. Wire size limits what AMPERAGE can run across it. A 6 gauge cable could do 12 volts, 120 volts, 240 volts, 1200 volts, or higher. The amperage at those volts would vary, depending on how many Watts you wanted. Watts = volts x amperage. (Things are actually a little more complicated that this, but for lay persons, this is sufficient most of the time.)

Am I the only one who thinks ”Emily Jones” might be Tony Caravano‘s pseudonym?🤔

Good rumors are always welcome. I really would like to see across the board access to the Tesla SC System sooner than later. We are going to need this for cross-country trips pulling the Airstream.

"200 miles of range in 15 minutes" is no problem for e-GMP vehicles (Hyundai/Kia). Maybe this means the RAN will be opening up to the public soon?

Rivian needs to determine the strategy to use for the RAN roll outs alongside the transition to NACS. if the future is NACS, why put out a bunch of stations with CCS connectors that need a retrofit in less than 2 years. I expect a deferral or slow down in roll outs so that at some point late next year, they can roll out RANs that are NACS native that are future proof.
