Just to verify - you have a 2025 Rivian R1S, correct? WIth a charge port that look like this:
Rivian R1T R1S NACS to J1772 Adapter Recommendations 1768113072105-3h

And you parked at a Tesla Destination Charger that looks like this:
Rivian R1T R1S NACS to J1772 Adapter Recommendations 1768113137684-k4

What did the end of the Destination Charger look like? 99% of all Destination Chargers have a "Tesla/NACS" plug:

That plug won't plug into a 2025 R1S. Were you plugging in your CCS->NACS adapter?

Because that adapter only works on (some) Superchargers. See the notes from other people about adapters that work for Destination charging.

If, on the other hand, your Rivian's charge port looks like this:
Rivian R1T R1S NACS to J1772 Adapter Recommendations 1768113350568-zv

Then you have a 2026 Rivian, and the Destination Charger should work without an adapter.

Some newer Tesla destination chargers include the adapter (they are Universal Chargers) so it is possible that he could plug in, but there was an error of some sort. We have them at the place I ski (although i use my own adapter and never really figured out how they work otherwise).

I stayed at a hotel with Tesla destination chargers that had J1772 cords on them... So saying "Tesla destination charger" doesn't really help solve the mystery of what OP is actually talking about. 😂

The Tesla destination charger does not appear on the rivian app, the Tesla app is able to pre authorize cc charge. The destination charger says it’s “Available to the Public”.

Thanks to those who attempted to make sense of my question. I got my NACS to J1772 adapter. I will test and update this post.

You didn't answer their question...Which port do you have? CCS or NACS? If you have a CCS there's just no way to plug the NACS into the port native port.

Wait...Did you use a NACS to CCS adapter instead of a NACS to J1772 adapter?

It’s CCS1. Maybe the tesla destination charger has been fitted with a J1772 adapter - that is the only way I could have plugged it in.
It was the Rivian timing out that i am trying to understand.

I was at a resort with side-by-side Tesla destination chargers. One worked without a problem, but the other acted just the way you described...it looked like it was going to work and then the Rivian said it couldn't communicate with the charger. I'm guessing it might have been a charger issue.

Nah - you did the right thing. I'm impressed that a destination had 9 chargers! I had a 50/50 shot where I was and picked the working one the first time. The second time the parking space was ICE'd so I tried the other charger to no avail. I was able to park and reach the first charger again.

Also, if it was a Tesla Wall Connecter (same hardware as Destination) it's possible it was not configured correctly to be most compatible with non-Teslas.
