On road trips I drive using both the Rivian nav and Google Maps (via my phone on a phone mount).

The comparison has been roughly:

20% of the time Rivian nav is better
10% of the time Google Maps is better
70% of the time they are the same

So I don't get all this vitriol towards the nav. No navigation system out there is perfect and Rivian outperforms Google Maps in my experience.
...maybe because your experience is different then many of ours...?

I tried to use the navigations system when I returned from San Fran airport and it told me to charge up at an EVGO stop in SAn Jose. The navigation system first of all does not show options on the map like the TEsla does. It doesn't give any specific info. about the chargers, it just says if you want fast chargers or available chargers but you are blind as to what you will be getting until you get there.

Then it directed me into a residential neighborhood and a dead end on a cul de sac in a residential neighborhood. GREAT. I looked through the trees there and saw a charging station so rerouted around to a shopping mall that holds the chargers.

I was on a time constraint so I only charged what I needed and saw that the map calculated that I had 50 miles over what I needed. I continued on my trip and then while I was driving it wanted me to go to some random street which clearly was not on the route as I was near the direct highway access to 85 S and eventually highway 101 the quickest way. it was stuck on this one road it wanted me to go on. Then it recalculated and I was basically now only 20 miles over what I needed and I had only gone about a mile since charging. it recommened me now to do another stop en route to my house in 150 miles or so. So now this was going to be a challenge whether the Rivian would arrive wiht the 20 miles it said i had extra.

I arrived at my house with the vehicle saying it was shutting down at 1% charge available and 2 miles remaining on the computer.

I really don't see the value of this software, we could use the google platform for a much higher success and Rivian could have save a few hundred million dollars instead of buying this POS platform which really isn't helpful.
Gary you are either a troll or have used very few NAV systems. Try the one I have in my Z8 and get back to me. Here’s a pic. Not my car but same system

We are on our first trip with Large Charge Marge, an R1T Max Pack, which we got a few weeks ago. Marge took 3 years, 3 months, and 15 days to arrive, so I’ve spent a little time on these forums with serious truck envy. Our plan of attack has been:

Map the trip for the day using ABRP Premium version, and then use the Rivian map display to select the charger ABRP suggests as the Rivian’s only destination. Rinse and repeat for each stop ABRP suggests.
100% this. I did this when I bought my R1S in Houston and drove back to the Bay Area..I had to switch between apps to make sure chargers were working and than navigate directly to that charger if it didn't already do it on the in car nav..which it didn't 60% or so of the time.

I have faith that it will get better in time. As did the Tesla nav from conception to what it is now. It'll get better.

Maybe we should have a "give me your funniest nav story". So Im up in Napa, the winery is off a right turn off the highway, but the Riv has me routed to go down a mile or 2, turn around then then take a left on a busy highway.
After you and all of the other drivers have been to several wine tastings? And you are on Highway 29 in Saint Helena and traffic is backed up for miles?

what are you talking about? you can filter for several things like to show chargers from specific networks: ChargePoint, Rivian, EVGo, Tesla and the power output they provide. Then the map will adjust to show only those.
Map will only show those, but the route will still take you to other chargers outside those filters. That setting only affects what is displayed, I once selected EA and RAN, but it navigated me to a 50kw EVGO.

I don't know about worst, but not very good and can result in running out of range. I simply do not trust it. On a trip down I-5 to Seattle, it told me to turn off the freeway and then after I did, it routed me back on. Then a few weeks ago on a trip down I-5 It told me to charge in Chehalis. I usually charge in Lacey but figured there was a new charger. 30 miles past Lacey it urgently told me to turn around. My wife checked Chehalis on her phone and there is no charger. Fortunately we had enough range to backtrack but it cost us an hour round trip. I always have a backup plan for road trips as the Rivian app, and ABRP also, do not seem to know about chargers. As we continued down I-5 I planned to charge at Harris Ranch, a great stop to have lunch while charging. Instead the Rivian app kept trying to force me off I-5 well before the Ranch. Then I wanted to top off at RAN Buttonwood before headiing over the mountain to Barstow and Kingman. But the Rivian app did not know there was a RAN at Buttonwood!

I thought ABRP was part of Rivian nav system. Is it not ?

I don't understand these problems... Routing is calculated by Google. Even if MapBox has inaccurate streets, the initial route is set by Google which we all know is probably perfect. I punch address in, I get to my destination with no surprises. Every time. Sure, I use PlugShare to pick chargers because there's a ton in there that Rivian likely won't ever publish for all to see, so I just navigate to that address and I'm good.

EDIT: I remembered ONE instance of something strange. Highway under construction but not closed or anything, nav sent me off to the feeder road and then back on at the next onramp.

EDIT 2: I guess it's just the POI search that's Google. Still, I guess I'm just lucky with OEM nav.

I don't trust ANY mapping software right now with charging stops. Point to point they are all fine but even google and apple maps have issues with chargers. I do that routing myself just like I never let google and apple maps plan gas stations for me either. They would take you to some sketchy gas station when a travel station is a few miles away. We are still a few years away from being able to not have to plan charging stops like gas stops.

Mine once told me to get on an interstate highway on-ramp instead of navigating into the nearby shopping center parking lot where the chargers were. To be fair, you could *see* the chargers from the ramp... LOL. ?

Edit: for all the good it does, whenever it pulls some shenanigans like that I say "Alexa, submit feedback" and proceed to curse it out. Wonder if that "feedback" goes to anyone? ?
When it navigates me to a company that I had to pick up some supplies from, it told me to take an exit ramp only to redirect me back to the hwy I was on, but now having to cross 2 lanes of traffic to get back to where I was originally!

I have noticed that it does send you on some pretty bad routes. I like to test it by having it navigate me to places I know and see if it comes up with something better or worse than what I've done previously.

I don't usually have issues with the Nav other than it seems optimistic about arrival time when driving in urban areas, e.g. around Boston, underestimating traffic and as you go the arrival time slips later and later.

Strangest routing the Rivian ever gave me was from Boston to a ferry dock on Lake Champlain in Charlotte, Vermont. It sent me off the interstate on smaller roads to cross a bridge further south, then up the NY side of the lake, and back across on the ferry. I reset my destination to the nearby town instead...

But it will get better - the new update adds waypoints and saved routes, though I haven't installed it yet.

Is this a 2023 100K car? Rivian’s sound system also beats my last setup, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s competitive.
