  • charge to 100%; in the winter it isn't a big deal; you just don't want to leave it for a few days in summer heat like that
I have never heard this. can you elaborate why this would be more OK?

There's a video by Jeff Dahn that has data to support that a full cold battery isn't nearly as bad as a full hot battery for dendrite buildup/degredation.
Thanks, I'll look it up. I can intuit how that could be true but would love to understand the reasons behind why.

appreciate the comments from those that understand the objective is skiing, not maximizing range. AT tires, cold temps, snow covered roads and a box to carry gear are fixed variables to accomplish the mission of getting sendy on the mountain. Variables I can/would change are speed, box placement (or addition of a fairing) and starting SOC. Unfortunately I don’t have off street parking which complicates things. I am probably worrying unnecessarily, but I don’t like the idea of charging to 100% the day before then having the car sit with a full SOC all night, my understanding is that’s not good for the battery and making this trip is a weekly ritual in the winter.

The Inno Wedge that I got is already the lowest profile box available from what I can tell. It will barely fit two pairs of skis stacked on top of each other (maybe 10” tall at most), but thankfully is plenty wide to fit the advertised 6-8 pairs in total. I have it mounted as far back as it will go without hitting the lift gate, so I’ll play around with moving it up to achieve more of a teardrop profile overall and see if that makes a measurable difference.
I also don't like to have the battery sitting at 100% for long. That's why for my road trips which needs 100% SoC, I'll adjust the charging schedule to let it just finish charging at around the time I plan to leave in the morning.

Might require us both to get degrees in battery chemistry. :)

But yeah, fascinating stuff. If you think of the inside of the battery as having a sponge between positive and negative, you move the electrons from one side to another to get electricity. Well, every move to the other side, charge/discharge, not all the electrons make it. And when you keep them all at one side for too long when full, I think they can "deform" the internals, causing the sponge to let even less through the next time.

At least that's how it was explained to me.

Just did my first Meadows run. Finally. I live near Ida B/Wilson HS. Took 84 to Wood Village. Then 26. Had a fatcat evo 6 rack with skis. Left home at 95%. Arrived with 148 miles all purpose range left. Got home with just under 30% left. No charging. 65 mph on the way out. A little quicker home.

Lots of room for activities in the back.

Love that downhill efficiency. ?
