Well, it did it again yesterday.

Pretty convinced it's a software bug when driving at speed and below 20degF. Was headed to go snowboarding yesterday afternoon. Have a relatively short stint on an expressway. About 3-5min after setting the cruise to 70, the truck starts blowing cold air. I watched the app this time, and the cabin got down to 59degF according to the app while continuing to actively blow cold air.

Here are the dash settings (rear was set to both console and floor vents on, no picture though).

I can confirm that the app updates the internal temp pretty regularly while driving. Had to force stop the app a few times and restart it to get it to read new data, but for the most part it stayed updated.

Now, what's fun is that as soon as I got off the expressway, like almost immediately, hot air came back. As in, before I could finish the exit ramp and turn left it was blowing hot air again, and the cabin warmed right back up. Didn't break 55mph, or set the cruise the rest of the way there and stayed nice and warm.

Also, the trip home with VERY similar conditions, it did fine. Even a 10mi stretch on the same expressway, and it did OK. Did fine on the drive in this morning with 12degF temps, and plenty of time on the interstate with cruise set at 70. Super agitating to be chasing something that isn't consistent.

Also makes me miss my '02 Silverado with dial that just had blue and red zones, and I would adjust a mechanical actuator to get the temp I wanted. Granted I couldn't preheat the truck from the chairlift on that one, it never blew cold air on me either. Technology is great when it works, and infuriating when it doesn't.

Try setting the temp at or above 72deg. In the past this was the difference between warm and cool setting for some of us.

I'll give it a try next time it happens.

I'm pretty cold natured in general, so that feels very warm to me, but I'll give it a try. Last 3 vehicles with "auto" settings on climate I would keep in the 67-69 range and be pretty comfy.

@Plummer43 Set the temp to 72degF on the drive home. Yesterday. Everything in full "auto" mode. Ambient temps were around 18degF.

HOLY SHITBALLS it was hot. I literally drove home with 2 windows cracked to let fresh air in. Stripped my fleece off at a stoplight and drove the rest of the way in a T-shirt and a polo. Even ran the A/C on the seats for a bit. I don't know how you folks live with that temp, it was a sauna in there.......The bright side though, the heater never turned off, and blew warm heat the whole time.

This morning I had it set to 67degF, full "auto" everything. Ambient was 23degF outside, and the truck did just what it was supposed to.

Pretty convinced it's a low temp setting coupled with sub 20degF ambient temps. Guessing a software bug at some level. Who knows, I'm sure the next update will introduce some other thing that will get my attention that used to work and now doesn't.

If you're reasonably close to a service center, I still suggest submitting a ticket. This is not normal and you shouldn't have to try ridiculous venting/temp setting solutions to get heat in the winter. You might be right that it's a software bug, but if it was me I would want to have it confirmed either way. Getting the vehicle in to the service center when it's cold is the best time so they can replicate the issue. Anyways, that's my 2 cents. Cheers and good luck!

Well, almost 2 months later I finally got an answer. Got this text from a service tech after they went through the truck in detail over the heat not working.

wanted to reach out and let you know that I did get confirmation from our other tech that your HVAC issue is software related, with the extreme cold we’ve been having it’s causing a reduction in performance for heating and cooling, Rivian is actively working on a fix that should be available in the next software update
Good news is that the only time the heat doesn't work is during the really really cold times. SO, you know, when I arguably need it the most, it suffers from a reduction in performance.

Guess I'll wait for an update :( Ugh.
