Known (to me at least since Feb 2023) software issue. When you are in the vehicle, make sure the rear floor heat is on …that will cause the software to use hot air all around…..
I'll try this on the way home this afternoon.

Ran out to lunch. Preheated from the office, truck was warm when I got there. Lunch spot with clients was only a few blocks away. Stayed warm that whole drive. Got inside and about half way through lunch I reheated the truck and put it on "2hr hold". Was warm when I got in and blew hot all the way back to office.

I'll leave it set to "auto" on the way home, and see what the rear vents are doing if it starts blowing cold again. If that doesn't solve it, I'll grab diagnostic data, and setup a ticket and see if the TCM is the issue as @54North mentioned.

Like @SolartoEV last winter the heat would run me out of the cab sweating. Could have worn a T-Shirt and shorts in a blizzard and been toasty. Now it's kind of the other way around. was warmer with the heat OFF this morning than with it running.

Would really prefer to avoid ANOTHER service ticket. Already been in 11 times in 14mo. I'm kind of tired of dealing with issues to be honest. Clearly if it's not a software bug, and it's a module or a sensor issue, the service center will have to address it.

I'm guessing sensor related issue. There must be something funky going on with how it's reading the cabin temps, just not sure why not driving resolves the issue.
Only happens while driving. Sitting resolves the issue it appears.

I agree. Feels like a sensor/software issue as the truck is clearly making heat when it wants to. For some reason it decides to not to any longer and I'm stuck until it sits for a minute.

Any idea how to pull data from the truck to watch sensors? I know the RIDE menu exists and how to get to it, but I feel like it goes away once driving. I have an OBD2 dongle and app, but have no idea if EV's still even use that protocol. I had VCDS for my Audis, and that was a GODSEND for troubleshooting stuff like this. Anything like that exist for Rivians?

I used to own a G1 and had the same issue every time the temp dropped below 20 maybe 15 degrees. Preheat was fine in the garage but the moment you start driving starts blowing cold air. Only way to help it along was not put the blower above 3.

My belief is that the heater cannot keep up when it gets that cold. First Mach E had similar issues from what I understand, maybe ford switched to heat pumps as well.

I live in WI so it frequently dipped below 20 degrees.

I thought mine would be related to the sensors as well, although the service center quickly ruled that out as they said that faulty sensors are usually very easy to diagnose. I think I got the "TCM" acronym wrong on my previous post. This is what was done:

I can say that I've never experienced that issue since having that module replaced. Hopefully you get a permanent fix without too much trouble.

The app will stay, only so long as you don't exit it while driving. Not sure it will show sensor data relating to the HVAC system, but you should still be able to alter temps etc with RiDE open thanks to the HVAC pop up menu.

@MountainBikeDude @54North @SolartoEV

Drive home, then another 80-ish miles to/from a company event all went off without a hitch. Truck ran the heat just as it was supposed to. Kept the windows clear, and acting like a "normal" HVAC system should.

I set the temp to 68deg, hit the Auto button, and then opened a single dash vent (passenger center) for "temp monitoring" with my fingers. It did turn to "cool" (not COLD) air at one point on the way home late last night, however I checked the app and it said the cabin was 72. With a 68 setpoint, that feels like the right decision there. I'm not super happy with the CONSTANT defrost, but this truck likes to fog the windows worse than any vehicle I've owned before, so I'll allow it.

I did TRY to trip it up on the drive home from the office yesterday (before the wife was in the truck with me), and if I turned off the rear floor vents, it would go cold. Turn them back on, it got warm again. I thought that was the culprit. Tried to recreate it, and was able to get a "fully manual" setting with HOT air out of the dash vents only.

About the only thing that changed that I can't control is the outdoor temps. The 3 times it's "run cold" on me, have all been under 15deg. The commute home, the work event trip, and the commute in this morning were all over 25deg. So not quite as "frigid" of ambient temps. Battery was significantly warm this morning as well at 67deg (from attempting to get back to 85% from yesterdays running around down to 30%). Doubt that has much affect on it, but it's another data point.

I'm not calling it solved until I have another frigid day to verify, but I was warm on the way in this morning, so that's something.

In other thoughts. HTF do we keep snow off these damn headlights? heavy wet snow coming down this morning and visibility was worthless on the commute in. Can we coat it inRainX or something?

Looked around and this is from a Facebook post a year ago. Did some digging, and it is a solid solution that will break down in the environment over time unlike pfas etc. If it worked in Colorado, fingers crossed it works in the PNW and it's wet heavy snow.

@MountainBikeDude Thanks for the reccomendation. I just bought a couple bottles on Amazon, we'll see how it goes.

Snow out here in Buffalo is pretty inconsistent. Depending on temps and if the wind is coming off the lake or not can change it from "wet and heavy" to "Light and pellety". We'll see how this stuff works out.

I'm picking some up today from the local Canadian Tire eh! But I won't see snow until I head out of Vancouver and up into the mountains this weekend.

@MountainBikeDude, do you have the UPC (usually ten digits) on this product?

I checked with my local bricks-and-mortar auto parts store owner; he can't get it from his suppliers, so in our area he thinks it needs to come from Amazon or Walmart.

EDIT: I just ordered two (one for each driver/vehicle) from Ace Hardware, which will ship to my local Ace Hardware store. Convenient, and avoids buying from [potentially political content self-redacted] such as Amazon and Wal-Mart.

Thanks!
