Got my R1T this past weekend. Loving it. It's my first full EV after a couple of PHEVs. I got a great overview of the UI during my service center pickup with all my questions answered. Drove off on that inaugural solo ride which felt how I'd imagine it might undocking from the space station and piloting your own craft for the first time.

Arrived at home, knew about the Park button on the end of right stalk, hit 'P' and it parked of course. Had AC running and some tunes playing.. Sat there for a moment contemplating my next move. Humorously, I sat in the vehicle for a good 5 minutes asking myself, "What did I miss? Why don't I know what to do now?" Then the most coincidental thing happened, another guy with an R1T who parks a few stalls away from mine rolls into the garage structure. I'm waving my arms and he rolls down the window. Feeling like a dweeb, I said, "How do you turn this darn thing off?"

He smiled and said, "You just walk away."

I knew the fob and PAK are proximity based and its a hoot when it recognizes you walking up a few steps away and comes to life. I just didn't realize you do the drill in reverse when exiting and leaving it. You close the door (with handle still poking out) and walk away. The really weird feeling for me is sitting in the seat with the air blowing, the music playing and the vehicle being so alive/awake sounding. Then opening the door and stepping out with all that activity still clearly happening with a symphony of sounds. Feels akin to the weirdness of purposefully locking your keys in an ICE vehicle while its still running. Its surreal to me still.

Figured I'd share my idiocy here to help a fellow EV newbie finding themselves in the same predicament.

Yes, you can of course step out and press the Lock button on the fob or app and it will immediately shutdown. But its meant to just be a walk-away method. Not sure I'll ever get fully accustomed to it.

Works great, except when it doesn't.

maybe I'm not so crazy with my routine of either standing there about 20-ft away waiting for it to do its thing or just going the conservative route and hitting the Lock side of the fob (or app button)

It's gotten better with every update. There are certain cases where my truck never went to sleep afterwards and ends up using a significant amount of energy to just exist. If Rivian gave us a way to force it asleep, I'd probably use it all the time.

on a related note (not worth its own thread) what does it mean in the phone app with indicator in upper right corner that sometimes seems to auto-enable and say "Awakening vehicle" when I don't think I touched anything, just opened the app at its home screen.

First time that happened to me I was in a mall maybe 100 yards away (that's as long as I could tolerate without checking the app for some indication my baby was ok) and I see that notification and a spinning arrow. I about shit a brick and triple-timed my pace back to the vehicle thinking I just opened it up and made it available for anyone that wanted to drive it away.

But I saw the door handles were all flush and the mirrors tilted in. So it wasn't accessible to anyone. To this moment I don't profess to understand what it means and why it does that.

Not idiocy at all. This is absolutely normal for first time EV owners. I went through the same process with our Tesla.
What's a little scary, though, are the stories on the Tesla forum of folks with both an EV and a hybrid, and pulling the hybrid in the garage, putting it in Park (but still on) and walking away.
Congrats on your new truck!

This is just talking about the communication between the vehicle and the cloud/app. Comms aren't needed 24/7 so they 'sleep'. Opening the app queued the vehicle comms to 'wake-up' and provide connectivity/status/control.

Do we have a way to reduce the amount of time the fog lights remain on after locking/walking away? I feel as if mine only remain on sometimes, and when they do it's for far too long...

Agreed - once I got used to it in my Tesla, I had to remember to turn off and lock all our ICE cars because I would get out and leave them running or get in and sit down and wonder why they weren't on. I left my Prius running a few times years ago when I first got that too.

It's an adjustment. With the Rivian, I'll probably manually lock it in public for a while until I'm comfortable with the software being as solid as the Tesla.

I don't think my FOB is working as a proximity thing. I have to press unlock and lock on the FOB for the vehicle to respond to me standing right next to it.

All of that just happened to me an hour ago when my R1T was delivered. Very odd feeling just walking away. This last work call can’t wrap up fast enough….

This was my experience as well when I got my Tesla MS. Sat in the car for 30 seconds wondering what to do. You get used to it though and will begin to think it should always be this way!

I have left my wife's car on and unlocked a few times now, in the garage and at the store. It sounds dumb but I really have to remind myself when driving her car that I NEED to turn it off and lock it. Just so use to my model X turning on, opening the door, you get in and press the brake and the door will shut. Then when leaving you just get out and shut the door and walk away.
