Even the cheapest Hertz rental has beeps when reversing, but with my truck, it CAN NOT see anything behind me. Service does not want to "test" this and I've been to service more times than I've taken trips in my truck. Yesterday, while backing out, I hit the car behind me and this is the 3rd time I've got NO BEEPS to even let me know, and truck so long, the mirrors are useless. Birdseye cam is very hard to rely on as well. Here's the wonderful photos and now my insurance will skyrocket.

The rear fenders stick out too, making it really hard to get free from a tiny bump into a huge scratch / dent.

Any one else having issues with safety beeps when reversing? That the truck can't SEE things behind when you're back up.

I've had this probem with 2023 R1T Gen 1, 2026 Tri-Moter R1T and now my top of line 2026 Quad R1T.

I'm going to fix it and return and then sadly leave the Rivian family as it's created such a headache for my family.

My wife and daughter to not feel save, and will rarely drive with me because of all the safety issues I've had: no front collision warning goes off/on randomly as does "Blind spot protection"

Pls let me know if anyone has thoughts?

If you don't give the sensors a moment to settle, they won't be on yet and you should be getting that warning on the dash.

I don't know how you could be backing up without looking at anything to the rear or side of your vehicle.

From a camera and notification standpoint you appear to have a malfunction with your vehicle. I’m sorry this happened and hope the repair is not costly to you.

Putting that aside, I don’t understand how you hit a vehicle due to the lack of either. Good old fashion eyesight should still work.

Wow! My sensors tend to scream at me from all angles when trying to back out, along with RED warning arrows on the camera views. I will say, though, I often realize that the space between me and the objects in question is considerably closer than what I see in the camera views. I will say that the side flares of the fenders do not help if, as in your case, is high.

As far as I know, there are only front and rear corner sensors and beeping is not the only clue it gives you that you are too close. You can look at the lights on the display.

Or better yet, you can use your side mirrors. Side mirrors are designed to allow you to see the side of your vehicle. They are very reliable and if you used them, this would not have happened.

I have my truck configured to tilt the side mirrors in when backing up. That make it easier to use them in this situation.

So sorry this happened to you, but I don't think there is anything wrong with your truck.

Mine also. They beep so much I just ignore the beeps and use my eyes.

That said, there are no side sensors on the doors or fenders. As I am backing out of my garage, the truck only beeps at things in front or behind me, and if I am halfway out of the garage the beeping stops. Because there are no sensors on the side of the truck to detect how close I am to the garage door frame.

I can easily catch the mirror on the side of the door frame if I am not careful and using my eyes and mirrors.

Provided he actually had the audio warnings turned on.

I feel for you that the sensors are not working. Mine work to the point of warning me about a curb when I'm parking. It's very functional. However, I have to agree with other comments here, we should be looking around and not relying on the car warning; specially if you know they are not working as intended. Hope you can sort this out without too much trouble.

Since the OP says this has happened with all three R1s he has owned, I think most likely it is not a defect in his R1T Quad. It is a misunderstanding regarding how the sensors work and their limitations.

Had to look this one up.

You can disable the rear sensors, in the event you have a bike rack or anything behind the vehicle. I think you can turn the others off too. I am always super careful when driving the truck, and I get dinged and donged constantly when I am close to anything. When backing up, I would have been alerted before I hit that escalade. I'd say the truck needs to be diagnosed, but you say it is the second vehicle that has done this, so I don't know. The mirrors are hardly useless, but they cannot show you whats it exactly behind you. If you passenger side mirror is adjusted correctly, I'm not sure how you missed the huge white suv.

Until you learn to drive, you really have got to buy a much smaller car. Somehow, most of us have managed not to do this ever even with cars that have zero electronics and massive blind spots. That said, all the sensors in mine alert perfectly. Have you tried a master reboot?

But seriously, please buy a much smaller car.
