R1T owner since April and moved to NC about the same time. Rivian was working through the process of getting my R1T registered and titled in NC; however, they recently informed me that NC is no longer accepting their online notary.

They are recommending I take this on.

Has anyone been through this process with NC? I don't even have an NC driver's license yet. We called to make an appt and the first available was in Sept.

Thanks for any advice.

I'm not sure how to cover the drivers license angle but the rest should be pretty easy. You may need to just go to the license office and wait. I suggest finding a friendly rural one nearby vs. one in an urban center. Same for plate office.

NC Title requirements state
  • The individual who is titling the vehicle must have a valid North Carolina driver license or ID. For new North Carolina residents, a valid out-of-state driver license and their North Carolina Temporary Driving Certificate are required.
Hopefully, your guide will initiate all Rivian required actions.
- You'll want to have Rivian create revised PBA for your signature that excludes the fees you paid during purchase process for NC taxes and fees
- Have Rivian refund the taxes and fees you paid as part of purchase. I was originally told by guide that this would take 4-8 weeks but it came in a matter of days of them initiating process of providing me DIY artifacts.
- Rivian should send you the Certificate of Origin (COO), hard copy of revised PBA and IL Tax Waiver form. I'm not sure of requirement for PBA and IL tax waiver but those are the docs Rivian sent me and I presented to NC DMV
- Go to the NC DMV https://www.ncdot.gov/dmv/title-registration/vehicle/Pages/documents-forms.aspx for title process and forms. I filled out and printed the title application on line as my typing beats my writing every time. I used the mileage from the COO rather than what I currently had which seemed logical and DMV people didn't question what I entered. The COO takes the place of your title in this context.
- I also printed out the Odometer Disclosure and Damage disclosure in case I needed to fill them out at DMV office, which I didn't
- Get the title application notarized or be sure a notary is available at your DMV, which seems to often, if not always, be the case. Note: I notarized the COO signature too and my DMV agent said that wasn't necessary as IL was not a notary state. No harm but $5 wasted.
- Go to your favorite "license plate" office with appropriate IDs (copy of co-applicant ID if applicable) and form of payment you can cover ~$3k with. Credit Cards are accepted for this without CC fee (I think). The $3k is a ~70% one time (3% tax) and the rest recurring every renewal (property tax and EV fee that replaces your gasoline tax). You'll be considered a "weighted" category of registration rather than passenger vehicle some smaller/lighter trucks might fall under.
- They should present you with permanent plate and registration. You can order vanity plate in weighted category later, if desired.
- My time at the DMV was <10 minutes including saying hi to my roofing guy. DMV staffer was GREAT, explained everything and handled the whole process, even for our relatively obscure vehicles, direct-to-consumer, no in-state entity, etc. as second nature.

Good luck!

Looks like they’re trying to dump this on most owners across multiple states. I refuse to be the Guinea pig in my state until others report back how “easy” it was. I’m also unclear on the fees Rivian will refund AFTER you pay yourself.

I got my "refund" before I self-registered but my process was long and drawn out (March delivery) due to constant fumbling by Rivian and RegUSA. I finally had everything I needed to register last week and now have my plates. It ended up being about $600 more than I originally paid Rivian and received by refund - late fees.....

Thanks! Looks like I came to the right place for information!

I was planning to go to Brevard, but the a local law enforcement suggest I try Sylva for a quicker turnaround. Now, Rivian is saying they can complete it, so I guess I will go with that option and see what happens.

I'd be surprised if Sylva would be any quicker than Brevard. I don't see Sylva as an Instant Title location and, as I've mentioned, mine took <10 minutes in Brevard including the wait for the one person in front of me on last day of month with supposed rush of renewal procrastinators. That being said, I might have enjoyed the drive and popping in to Innovation for lunch while in Sylva had I gone there.

I'd be very interested to know what exactly Rivian thinks is fixed in ability to do NC title and reg on customers' behalves. I might suggest that if its been more than 30 days since delivery and you still don't have a permanent plate and empirical evidence of title application (I got my title couple of weeks after visit to DMV), I'd press Rivian for the paperwork to DIY.

I'm in NC and have the same issue. They mentioned the notary they used (online app) wasn't being accepted by the state of NC. They did say they are still looking into a workaround and will update me again soon. It's interesting they are recommending you take it on. I wonder if it's more because of the NC driver's license requirement. I'll update you if I hear anything else, or it gets worked out.

Took delivery of my truck this past Thursday. Greg (Nermal) had warned me ahead of time, but it was a little too late to change it to self registration. They told me that NC would no longer let them do out of state notary. They gave me the 3 documents pre-filled with UPS Next Day envelope. I just had to get them signed and notarized and sent back to Rivian. Hopefully it will be registered and I will get plates soon! I will report back...

I’m in Boone and found that self-registering was MUCH easier and faster than letting Rivian register. Not sure it’s all Rivian’s fault, as one of the ladies in the local tag office said the NC state office will receive mail that won’t get opened for months. I brought the documents Rivian sent, along with proof of insurance, buyers agreement, and printed the purchase summary from the Rivian site, and was able to receive a tag the same day.

Do it yourself. The line may be long where you live, you may have to explain several times what kind of car it is, but in the long run, its far easier than waiting for Rivian.
If you wait for Rivian, it won't happen.

If you don't mind me asking, do you recall the amount of everything else besides the car tax (3%) you had to Pay to get your plates?I am just trying to verify rivian sent the right amount in the check for me to self register.

I’m really not sure. I paid $2,957.16 for everything including a Blue Ridge Parkway tag ($30), plus $5 extra for a notary fee. I will say that the ladies working there said the taxes Rivian collected were off by a bit. Also I have not yet received the refund for the taxes I paid Rivian.

In GA and my tag expired a month ago. I would for sure suggest trying to self register, if possible. Mine is caught inbetween somehow and they supposedly can't let me self register now.

Did you not need a weighted plate?
