Offroad enthusiasts, what do you think of R2 and R3X?

Tri-motor offering makes it sound unlikely to get a locking diff. Are you excited for the stock capabilities?

My big question is modifications. Will you be able to lift them and can you put bigger tires on (and smaller wheels)? How about adding armor? Since it's Rivian, I kind of doubt they will be modification friendly.

I’m curious what the suspension looks like. I’d love for it to be beach/sand capable!

Very excited about both! I reserved an R2, right after RJ rolled it out. My first thought was, “Can it be lifted and can I add rock rails?” So, I’m right there with you! After seeing the R3X, my next thought was, “How about an R2X, RJ?!”

The size, dimensions and break over angle of the R2 looks to be very similar to the old Jeep XJ's.

Jeep XJ's, to this day are some of the most capable vehicles you can take off-road.

Of course, anybody that has been on this forum for more than 15 minutes knows what's coming next...

For street racing, go with the tri-motor, for off-road, you're going to want the differentials front and rear.

I loved my 98 XJ that I owned for nearly 20 years. That's a big part of why I think the R2 is my "Goldilocks" Rivian. It's a great size for a true "utility" vehicle instead of a mall crawler. My main concern is with ground clearance, but the stock XJ had about the same amount of ground clearance (maybe slightly less). I'd love to know if you'll be able to put 18 or 19" wheels on the R2 for higher aspect tires that would be better for offroad performance. The other thing that will be interesting to see is whether it will be easier to add 1-2" of lift to the R2 due to a simplified suspension.

All complete speculation at this point, but I'd lay a dollar on the table that the R2 will have suspension similar to the model Y. A fair number of Model y's are getting lifted, so so hope exists.

I'm trying to justify having an R3X in my life. Would be a blast on gravel and dirt roads. I'd certainly want a "normal" suspension and not air for this application. The power should be just insane. Can't wait to take one to Rally Ready.

I'm dreaming of a DM R2 with about 3" of lift on 18" wheels with 33" K02s

The R2 will have a coil spring suspension so it will be conventional lift methods to improve angles and clearance. Same for the R3. We are in a new era. Used to be a transfer case defined a potential serious off-road vehicle. Now we have to look closer at the running gear to see if it will stand up to abuse. Without armor, no rivian is going into the tough stuff beyond some bad dirt roads. I've seen plenty of stock Toyotas tackle rock crawling trails and it's always ugly at the end of the day. So prep may define what an R3 will do and come unscathed. Rivian has proven that it can create a capable platform.

I want to believe that Rivian completely understands the R3 market and that this market loves to mod.

I'd think offroaders are still wondering where that full size spare fits in the R1S.

RJ said the R3X has bigger tire wells to accommodate bigger tires ?
