Own a gen 1 R1S. It's used as the all rounder for long drives and to drop kids. Thinking about getting the refresh but just picked up 1st gen in Jan. I want to know what is coming to gen 1 to know whether to get gen 2 or keep gen 1. Also it's an expensive car so ...

Im in a similar situation. Picked up my Gen 1 R1S in December 2023 and am curious what exactly is not being pushed to the Gen 1s. Some of the updates for Gen 2 sound fun but, at least for me, the novelty of them will wear off quickly. (As in “these go to 11”.)

The only accurate answer is we don't know yet. They haven't announced that. There are specific features we can say with certainty will not be available to gen1 because of hardware differences, like the Apple Watch/ Wallet feature is not going to work because the gen2 vehicles use ultra wide band instead of NFC.

I am pretty sure we will get the lane change cameras, etc but who knows? Rivian's comments about the interior lighting are odd. We all know the vehicle can have selectable colors because they give us Halloween modes, but they claim gen1 is not going to get the selective lighting ?‍♂

Sounded like they might walk back that decision. RGB control is probably coming to gen 1 but the amount of choices is going to be quite limited compared to gen 2, and it's because the hardware in gen 2 is better for it.

Ah that makes more sense. I just couldn't figure out why they were being so cagey about it. It's such a small thing but people love it.

Lane change probably not doable on gen1 considering gen2 has 3 camera on the side mirrors alone. One specifically says lane change camera

The comments that Wassym posted on Reddit are the only real "concrete" information that we have from Rivian currently, and I'd take everything else (negative or positive) with a grain of salt until Wassym (or someone else in a senior position at Rivian) directly confirms:

Also keep in mind that a significant number of Rivian employees own and/or lease Gen 1 vehicles, so I think Gen 1 experience will continue to be on their minds for the immediate feature, even while a majority of their attention necessarily shifts to Gen 2.

I think is better to list what the Rivian people mentioned is coming to Gen1 (this list will be way smaller unfortunately).
From the various interviews that's what I head so far:
  • New UI
  • Blind spot camera view
  • AC presets
  • Gear Guard remote view (in Q3)
  • Dolby Atmos

A novel idea is to wait for the upcoming update which should be relatively soon. Then we'll find out for sure what Gen1 gets, at least in this first update.

Edit: Okay that's a bit condescending to say it like the above, but what's the point of speculating. Nothing will change on how much speculation we do. Take a walk, drink a beer, or drive around in your awesome R1. Be happy.

.....(such as enabling heated mirrors, since Gen1 doesn't have heated mirrors).
Everyone keeps saying this, but the Gen 1 owners manual specifically calls this out as being there on Gen 1.

Interesting. Wonder if we'll see that on the new update for Gen1, or maybe it's sharing a circuit with the rear window and can't be separated? Either way I've replaced my example, thanks for calling that out.

What we know so far:

Gen 1 does have heated mirrors, but are (for some insane reason) tied to the rear defrost.

If the mirrors aren't heated, my placebo effect of hitting rear defroster sure works!
