110lb is specifically chosen because that is the 5% percentile adult female body weight. So no, not biased for males at all. That makes the weight low enough to cover the vast majority of adults and high enough to cover the vast majority of children who might be injured or killed by the airbag deploying.
It’s progress for sure, but it’s a relatively recent change In the grand scheme. Crash standards have typically been designed around a 25th percentile male as the smallest occupant

This has also been covered on the the other threads, but the gist is this this weight limit is correct and expected, and is in fact written into federal law.

An airbag going off in the face of someone who weighs less than 110 pounds is LESS SAFE than the airbag not deploying. They are disabled because that's the desirable outcome, not because it's a mistake.

All that being said, it does seem anecdotally like the R1 sometimes disables airbags when they should be enabled, my only point is that the 110 lb threshold is the law and for good reason.

It could also be noted that the 110 lb threshold is pretty high because airbags have been traditionally designed almost exclusively for adult male bodies, but that's a story for another day...
On several occasions I've had passengers WELL above the 110 lbs threshold not experience the same issue. Usually some retracting the seat belt all the way and relocking it resets it and/or getting out and getting back in.

It's a *real* issue and not just someone's misinterpretation of the weight threshold law.

Same problem here, wife is 95 lbs. Airbag argument aside, the Rivian should detect a person (of any size) in the passenger seat and enable HVAC controls.

Yes, I guess with all the discussion focused on the 110 lbs threshold, just want to to reiterate that it is an intermittent issue which seems to be related to the seat belt in addition to the seat sensor.

I’ve been having the same issue since I got my truck, was to the service center and they just said the seat detection is working correctly. My wife is 120 lbs but 90% of the time doesn’t detect her in the seat, moves all around and tries to get it to detect and it’s very sporadic. I’ve had 0 detection issues with anyone around the 200 lbs mark

I have my new R1S for three weeks now, and while I don’t have a passenger in my front passenger seat daily, a few times now, when I have had someone in the front seat, I have noticed that the car interimittently has not detected a person in the front seat, which means the passenger’s side airbag was deactivated, and the passenger side climate controls were inaccessible. The former issue is of more concern to me, of course. I reached out to Rivian, and they indicated that the seat sensor is designed not to detect a passenger unless that passenger is over 110 pounds, and since I advised them that the passenger was over 110 pounds, they suggested that I soft reset the vehicle and see what happens. It seems like the issue still exists. I was honestly surprised to learn that the sensor requires 110 pounds before it deems whatever is in the front sheet to be a passenger - seems to me that there are adults that are 110 pounds or less that can sit in the front seat. Second, and more importantly, has anyone else experienced this issue? If so, has anyone been able to resolve it and how if you did?
I have had the same issue when my teen daughter sits in the passenger seat. When I ask her to wiggle around and move back and forth on the seat, that seams to register the sensor to detect she is there an then everything turns on.

I took delivery in June and had this problem. My fiancé is 130+ lbs and it would not register her in the seat. I got a quick appointment after I insisted it was a safety issue. They verified the sensor was out of spec and ordered a complete new passenger seat (it’s all 1 part number from a service center perspective). After replacing the seat we’ve not had any further problems.

That’s the first I’ve heard of them replacing anything for this problem, but it sounds like many of us have run into issues with this.

I’m bringing it in to have them look at it in a little over a month. I’ll report back if they do anything to correct the issue

My wife is 110 lbs. If she sits wrong in the seat or reclines too far, the sensor turns off. Annoying. May ask when I go for service next week. They'll probably suggest having her sit in a booster. ?
Same exact issue here - she usually presses herself down in the seat which is ridiculous to get it to “activate.”

One of the service centers, can't recall which, said the problem is a piece of trim that interferes with the switch at the back of the seat bottom cushion underneath and that it was an easy fix.
