Thanks Polar, any pics for the mirror tap install you did for your dashcam? Do you know if that draws more power? I’m trying to install an aftermarket CarPlay screen and it looks like the center console usb-c does not produce enough power or I could just route a really ling cable. The OBD is inconsistent at best.

For the wire tap forgive my ignorance but where does the black wire go, I only see the red wire.

Thanks in advance!

I’m sorry I did not take any pictures when I installed the mirror tap - find the radar detector install thread that is where I found what wires to tap into. Personally, I would not feel comfortable attempting to power a display from that wire tap. The feed is only powering the rearview mirror auto tint as far as I can tell.

As for the black wire from my fuse, tap below the dash, I just grounded it to the closest nearby piece of metal that was available.

I found another decent solution that’s better than the Scosche OBD-2. It’s actually a similar solution by Garmin:

the issue with the Scosche was there is no way to turn off the power. This could present battery drain issues in the longer run.

The benefit of the Garmin is it has a 10 minute after car shutoff setting. I noticed that the CarPlay screen and dash cam combo is powering off about 30 minutes after I lock the doors. It looks like it takes a good 20 minutes for the car to go to full sleep mode.

The only issue I noticed was when charging the car, the car doesnt sleep so the device stays on until fully charged then shur down.

For the fuse tap solution does the power shut down as soon as the car is locked or does ir take a few minutes for the car to go to sleep?
