Picked up my dune yesterday! Liking the interior way more than I thought I would. The color is also better in person. First ev and Rivian and it just feels really composed.

I did have questions on efficiency though. I know it’s early but had questions on what I’m seeing. Picked up in Sacramento and drove to Truckee probably avg 75. I think I got only 1.3 kW.

drove around some more today around the Truckee area mostly freeway, 70 mph, out side temp in the high 40s, all purpose, standard height, 20” all terrains. I reset the trip meter and it was doing 1.5 kW. Heater was set at 67.

Is that efficiency to be expected? What’s also confusing is that the miles left on the dash and battery percentage would make me think I have 300 mile range. Based on the efficiency on the trip meter at 1.5 kw and a capacity of 141 I only have a range of 211 miles? That seems pretty off from the 320 advertised.

It's cold and 70-75 driving yes that's what you can expect. Once it warms up it will get better and under 70 is also better.

I get 2.5-3.0 at 65mph when it's 60-75F outside. Wait I'm on 21's ignore my efficiency not apples to apples.

The drive to Tahoe is mostly uphill and on ATs, that efficiency rating isn’t surprising. On the way back home, it’ll be much better

As someone who drives in mountains and cold quite a bit, I can say you are getting what you should. The heat pump also kills the efficiency. It takes me 270 miles of range to drive 160 miles (max pack)

So is the miles left showing on the dashboard a completely inaccurate number?
IMG_6808.jpeg
Pretty much, yes. The dash estimate is just the SOC converted to range using the nominal range at 100%. That 100% nominal EPA range is NOT a highway range, it’s a mix of city and highway. The nav screen reports accurate numbers when it knows your destination and route and takes into account a lot of other factors.

Would be nice if the dash adjusted to show my range based on my current usage. I don’t punch in a destination when I’m just driving around so it’s be nice to know how much further I can go. Or am I missing where this is displayed?

The range will always be a guess unless your truck knows exactly where you are going and how fast you plan to drive.

Ford used to use driving history to adjust the displayed range in my Mach-e, but people didn't like that either. Some people thought they had the wrong battery installed and insisted on getting it evaluated by technicians. LoL. Now Ford displays EPA range just like Rivian does.

If you put a destination in the navigation it will tell you the estimated range at arrival. I have found that to be pretty accurate.

By the way, a cold battery has less capacity than a warm battery, and the truck will attempt to heat it, using more energy. Summer range is much better.

You were not operating in "normal" conditions.

Elevation is your enemy. Regen is your friend.

You were gaining 6,00 feet in elevation, over 120 miles at 75mph - that's UPHILL in a California go kart race. I've done that several dozen times - and that's about right.

I have driven from Bridgeport to Sacramento (190 miles DOWNHILL) and had 50% charge at destination. Physics at work. All is well.

The Coffeebar Bakery by the RAN in Truckee is awesome and the Rustic Table in Emigrant Gap is a destination restaurant.

P.S. CHP heavy around Nyack and Bowman.

I’ve done the Sacramento to Truckee drive dozens of times in all sorts of weather conditions and speeds. Dropping the speed to 65 makes a huge difference on the way up the mountain (though it’s less fun, takes longer, and often means you’re slower than the flow of traffic once you make it past Rocklin) but warmer weather also helps. Either way if you go slow or fast there’s plenty of range to get from the Sacramento RAN to the Truckee RAN.

I had the same issue when going cross country and trailering. I was told that if you push the reset history button, it will recalculate your range performance and update the numbers. It definitely worked for me. You get to it on the energy screen… choose the the (i) button next to the energy level, and then choose “Reset History”.

FWIW - I almost NEVER pay attention or care about range day to day. The battery in these vehicles is WAY more than enough for daily commuting and driving. I do about 45 mi/day on average and it uses maybe 12% of the battery to do that. It's very common when you're new to an EV to worry about range, but as you get used to it, you'll worry about it less and less

The only time I really pay attention to range is when I'm doing long trips, and in those cases I do have a destination in the GPS anyway, so I can use that number
