The ol' bait and switch. Thank you RJ Scaringe, for promising a product, taking a large deposit for a custom configuration of said product, and then never delivering. I was an early adopter of the R1S and configured a quad motor version with just about every option. Then I waited.....and waited......and then got a nice rendering in the mail with a letter and all the niceties of a company doing their best to woo more customers.......and then continued to wait. And THEN!!!!!.....No, I didn't get my vehicle. What I got was "here are some other cars you can choose from and use your credit towards. Sorry, we know they're not the quad motor you ordered, or even the right color, and don't have the right interior, but if you don't select one of them before the end of September 2024 we're going to cancel your initial pricing.....OH, and we're going to keep your initial $1,000 deposit until you actually fight us to have it returned.........OH, and when you persist and try to explain that that's not what you signed up for we'll just tell you that due to the lease pricing and the changes in the production blah blah blah, our promise to you is no longer valid." Crappy, crappy company. I had really high hopes and really believed in their product but after that experience I will be turning as many people away from Rivian as possible.
So you signed up here to make this one response about a problem that was from Sept 2024 and has nothing to do with the subject of the post (trade in value). I've custom ordered two Rivians and didn't see anything like this. Sorry you did, but maybe you just need to let it go and move on (after 16 months).

Carvana and others like it will resell your Rivian, Rivian will only put it to auction to other resellers. When you cut out the middle man you can afford to offer more. There are lots of reasons to be annoyed with the company but imo this is not one.

Weird post. I experienced no such problem when purchasing my 2026 R1S. Now in all honestly I was not configuring a very specific build. I picked one that had the options I wanted right out of their inventory and while the black was not not in inventory when I made my commitment one popped up within 14 days of my original purchase and I was able to switch to it with no problems, no cost impact , just a delay of about 2 weeks as it was rolling off the assembly line.

I personally used their trade-in service and it was the easiest trade-in I’ve ever done. No they didn’t offer “top dollar“, but it was within the Blue Book wholesale range and certainly fair.
I concur that it was the easiest trade-in experience, by far. As far as value, Rivian actually gave me the BEST price for my trade-in compared to Carvana and CarMax.

Tesla offered 4k more and my trade-in is a Lightning. So I would assume they would do the same as Rivian.

The worst part is, I was working with one guy that said they had a few that they were offering an additional 3500 off to make it more in line with Tesla’s offer, it just wasn’t shown on the website yet. I can only assume his shift was over as half way through the email thread a different guy started responding and was frankly rude. He straight up told me to sell to the third party and a buy a Rivian. My response was I don’t really want to have a 3rd party to the transaction because I lose the tax savings.

His response was something to the effect if I want to consider a rivian again to reach out. The interaction left a bad taste in my mouth.

Hey all, apologies for not posting in the correct thread - this one is titled "Purchasing Frustration" so I assumed I was good here. My point was that I was one of the very first in line for a custom build R1S, back in August of 2019. Not sure if anyone here was there when they were first offered - if so, I'd love to know your experience. I waited for years for my exact build, the one they sent me and confirmed, to enter production. It never came and was never offered. I ordered a quad motor. By the time the big credit was offered they were not manufacturing the quad motor in the gen 2 yet, and you could no longer customize with what they had at the beginning. Yes, I gave up the 20+k credit because the vehicle they wanted to sell me was not what I ordered and they are way overpriced to begin with. I'm sorry if others are simply too awestruck with Rivian to understand what they did to so many of their early adopters and that settling seems to be okay with you. Sure seems to be a lot of used ones for sale out there now 👍

I was here then. Got a quad exactly how I speced it. No issues. Oh, and so did ~10,000 others...

Got my quad motor just as promised. So you wanted a gen2 quad motor for gen 1 quad prices? Totally unrealistic. You should have just gotten a gen 1 quad which is what you reserved back in 2019.

What exact build did you want that Rivian never made? I remember looking through the R1 Shop trying to find exactly what I wanted and it didn’t take more than 5 days, IIRC. Did you want an exterior color that Rivian prohibited with Forest Edge, the Explore trim level that got axed, a 2-row R1S, a Gen1 Quad with max battery pack, or an accessory that Rivian never produced? Genuinely curious why you didn’t get what you wanted.

edit: typo

There’s a way to contribute to a thread but coming in with basically a rambling 2:00 AM drunk text on an unrelated matter is not one of them.

The follow up message still has minimal information. It seems odd that all of this seems to have concluded with you not buying a Rivian quite some time ago, yet you come out of the blue in the manner that you did for your first and second posts, ever, after apparently preordering in 2019. Like I said before, it’s just interesting.

Rivian gave me $4k more than Carvana for my R1S trade in (unsure if they pay more for Rivians?). So I was the opposite of OP (and I had to trade in with Rivian really for the tax savings too.) As for our pre-order poster, I am flummoxed . . . There was an absolute ton of time to get a car and always inventory to choose from. I ended up just snagging one that was close enough (really it was no where close to my original config that I “wanted” but I was quite happy with it). Rivian was begging pre-order people to convert their orders so I find it hard to believe a config couldn’t be found or made but what do I know.

Guessing your issue was because you selected a Red exterior with Forest Edge interior and they stopped making those a long time before you lost your credit.

Why do companies like Rivian and Tesla absolutely refuse to negotiate on trade in value. I was going to buy a R1S today but Rivian offered thousands less for my trade in than Tesla, Carvana, and Carmax. Their solution was to sell to them and then buy a Rivian. It irks the hell out of me when companies feel like you should feel privileged to buy their product that they make you jump throw hoops to do it.
Rivian isn't the one buying the vehicle, they are just the facilitator and they don't have any say in the pricing. All they could do is knock more off the new vehicle price, and the "sales" people have very little runway for that.

Yeah that was the issue. I had been talking to a guy named Noah for the past couple of weeks and had told him multiple times I wasn’t interested because the trade-in was so low. He had told me to sell it 3rd party and I had already told him I don’t want the Rivian that bad.

So on Thursday he emailed me and said they have a few that have an extra $3500 off but it wasn’t showing on the website yet. So my response was great I’ll buy one, just send me the ones you have.

A few hours later a different person took over the email thread and straight up told me they didn’t have any with a discount and for me to sell it 3rd party and come back. My response was I had already told the other guy multiple times that wasn’t going to happen.
