Just curious...is anyone else concerned about the wear in and tear being put on the cars pumps, motors, computers, etc every time you just open a door?

I've been to my car a few times today to grab something out of it and/or put stuff in. Every time, it thinks we're going on a trip and starts up all of its systems. To me, this seems completely wasteful and unnecessary and likely to cause premature wear on expensive components. It also drains the battery.

Am I missing something here? Why are these vehicles designed this way? I'm concerned that out of warranty, owning one of these might be asking for trouble in part because of this design methodology.

Otherwise, love my R1T. Incredible vehicle, but can't seem to get used to this. Thoughts anyone?

At this price point most people expect those kinds of creature comforts.

Think of it as an expensive puppy who gets excited every time you walk past his leash on the wall?

I’ve had my Tesla for 8+ years and 90k miles, does not seem to have been an issue so not overly concerned with my R1S.

Nope never thought anything of it, working as designed. Seems like most people think it should wake up quicker than it does. Turns off and sleeps just as quickly as it wakes up for me if I walk away and go inside. Again working as designed.

If after a year you can't get use to it, maybe the R1T isn't for you. Why adjust to a vehicle anymore, just get what you want and can live with.

Agreed, I hate that the whole car wakes up when I just need to grab something. But not worried about the car, hardwired a dashcam and the first one already failed on me, so the less power cycles on this replacement, the better. Wish they waited until the drivers seat is occupied.

I wouldn't worry about it. Sometimes I'll turn off the HVAC if I'm in and out a lot so I'm not wasting power.

Other than that, I let it do its thing.

I like it waking up. I can have a passenger enter and the AC starts going before I even sit down. No engine to start, no buttons to push, it's great.

This sort of thing bugged me too when we both sold our gas cars and switched to EVs 15 years ago, but has never been a problem and I pretty much ignore it now. The only thing I do is turn off climate control if I'm going to have a door open for a while.

This is pretty common on newer vintage vehicles. I measured my Bronco Sport when I first got it and I recall it drew 4 amps for 5 minutes just because I opened the door. Lots of relays clicking and cooling fans in the headlight assemblies turning on.

Turning off proximity lock/unlock helps but of course if you open the door all bets are off.

I don’t think it’s going to shorten the life of anything. This is one of the reasons I like an actual on/off switch. I prefer to have it only start when I request.

The only thing I can think of that could minimize this would be camp mode. Stay off.

As someone who's worked on vehicle electronics, they are designed to have a pretty long life. The capacitors and resistors that are selected have a heat and cycle range that's better than what you'd likely get in your cell phone or other cheap electronics. So, unless you're a power user, or using it for work or something, it'll likely be fine for a very long time.

ICE ECU's (Engine Control Units) and other control units on ICE vehicles are also turning on and off all the time. So, this isn't a new problem.

That said, I still manually turn off the AC in my Tesla when I'm in the garage, but that's often times because my kids don't always close their door, and I don't want to cool/heat the garage needlessly.

I disabled the proximity at home because we were initiating the bat signals really often just playing in the yard or when my wife would work in the garden, and it's reduced what I thought was vampire drain and doesn't come on and off all the time.

Nope, it does t fully help. I can still hear relays clicking even with proximity of. At least it doesn't turn on the motors/pumps etc.
