Taking delivery of my R1T pretty soon, and thinking about what my home charging situation should be. My garage currently has two Tesla wall connectors installed. (I will still own one Tesla, and have several family members who visit with Teslas). Both my Tesla wall connectors have the long cable, so reaching a port regardless of which way the car is facing is no problem.

Questions:

- When Rivian offers a NACS adapter, I presume it will work with my Tesla home chargers… Correct?
- Until the official Rivian NACS adapter is available, is there a 3rd party one I can use reliably without burning the house down?

Any other tips or advice for me?

Thanks! Excited to get my R1T!

No one (probably including Rivian) knows how the official adapter will work. But my prediction is that there will be different adapters for AC and DC.

While its possible to build an adapter that worked with both AC and DC, it would be much more complicated and would require computer chips and moving parts. Tesla uses the same pins for AC and DC, but CCS uses a different set of pins for DC. So a combo adapter would have to first figure out what type of charge was about to happen, and then reconfigure itself to use the correct output pins. Fitting multiple sets of 500 amp switches in the adapter would be rather challenging.

As for what to do in the meantime, I suggest this one:

TeslaTap. Google it. Get the 80 amp version. They have one specifically made for the Rivian. Get that one.

I use a TeslaTap Mini 60 Amp version for my TWC. There is also the added benefit of being able to take the adapter with you when you travel so you can use Tesla destination chargers.

The adapter from Rivian will most likely be for DCFC so it will be a NACS to CCS1 adapter. I suspect they will also make a NACS to J1772 as well but that isn't confirmed to my knowledge.

We have a R1T and a Tesla MYLR. Rivian came first and I bought the Rivian wall charger which means that i have the J1772 plug. Tesla came later and I charge it with the Rivian wall charger with a converter plug with absolutely no issues. I also have the NACS adapter for the R1T that i use at L2 chargers found at hotels and such.

TeslaTap. Google it. Get the 80 amp version. They have one specifically made for the Rivian. Get that one.
I have 2 Tesla wall connectors, and bought the 80A Tesla Tap mini that was specified to work with the Rivian‘s oversized ground pin. Works perfectly and is a great fit on both the Tesla wall connector charging handle and the Rivian’s charge port.

Do yourself a favor and use the link above to umc-J1772 site and get the 80A connector for the RIvian. The reason for the 80A connector is that some destination Tesla chargers (NOT superchargers) are the 80A variety. You will melt the connector if you use a lower rated connector. The destination chargers in many hotels, parking decks, etc. They are very convenient. It costs a bit more than the ones you see on Amazon, but it is very well built and can handle the current. This is not an area to cheap out on. I have the same setup as you, and I have two of the Tesla taps. One I travel with, and one that stays in the garage by the Tesla wall charger.

From experience I purchased the Lectron Tesla to J1772 adapter but it fit too tightly in my R1t charge port and tended to get warmer than I was comfortable with while charging for long periods. . It was also not UL approved. I would go with the Tesla approved adapter as most posts are recommending

Need to amend what I said above... Your Rivian will not pull 80 amps regardless. My point is that a connector that can handle 80 amps is safer. Others will disagree. I would avoid Lectron adapters. Here is a short description of how L2 charging works that helped me understand it: Understanding EVSE's (umc-j1772.com) .

Tesla just released its new Universal Wall Connector that comes with a Tesla/NACS connector and has a built in “magic dock” adapter for J-1772. It sells for $595, so $120 more than the normal Wall Connector. And they stopped selling the J-1772 only version. Says it will start shipping in October. Looks like a good solution for multi-EV homes with Teslas and other brands. And can share a circuit with up to 5 other Tesla Wall Connectors.

OP already has two Tesla Wall Connectors, so probably not worth getting this, but for others this could be a good solution. I’m thinking of getting one for a shared family second home, because several family members have Teslas and I now have a Model Y and an R1S. To date we have shared a 50A NEMA 14-50 outlet using mobile chargers, but that limits charging to 32A. With this we could go up to 40A and possibly 48A.

So the 60A version should be fine, and saves $40 - right?

Correct a 60 amp rated adapter will be sufficient as todays EV’s tend to have a max charge rate of 48 amps. May change with new vehicles down the road but no way of predicting that and not an issue today

I ordered the Tesla universal wall connector. It already shipped and I should have it in a few days. Tesla shipping a product early? So it seems….

Great choice!

I actually replaced one of my Tesla wall connectors with the one that has a j1772 plot a few weeks ago and then the new dots all model came available. Would have purchased that if it were available at the time. Good luck.

FYI. When you set up the new wall connector it is now done thru Wi-Fi. Not your home Wi-Fi but a SSID generated by the new wall connector. It can be a bit finicky but will eventually connect.

This week I ordered the Universal Wall Connector for the family lake house, and a Teslatap Mini for my R1S. I went with the 80A one because I have an 80A Tesla HPWC at home and who knows, one of my two friends with Ford Lightnings might visit…
