What are folks thoughts on getting a late vin pre-refresh build vs a refresh build as far as reliability is concerned.

I’m supposing The refresh may have some new bells and whistles, but given the changes I’m sure there will be the corresponding bugs.

Thoughts?

I'm sure there is a major Osborne effect going on right now but:

best deals will be on Late VIN QM+Large

however if you aren't in a rush,

you could take a gamble.. wait for the factory to re-open and see what they announce,

and then try to see what left over pre-refresh trucks are going for and possibly get a smoking deal or decide you want a refreshed one instead at whatever they will be selling them for and forgo the current incentives

Best thing to do is wait for the refresh and if it isn't significant you might be able to get a deal on a pre-refresh one.

My thinking is that a refresh will implement changes that increase reliability and make any issues easier to address. I can't say that with any authority, but I imagine Rivian has been cataloging every major and minor repair over the last three years to inform the refresh. Of course, as a previous poster pointed out, the first batch of production will probably be a bit buggy as they work to refine their new pieces, parts, and processes.

I think the refresh is going to be different trim levels on the R1 - heated/cooling seats, dimmable mirrors etc. if it worked for ICE makers, it should work for EVs. Right?

No material measurable difference, as it's same company in first 5 years of production. They'll be issues just any new car company. Whether they address them is the the biggest question.

R2-> could be different, but R1 isn't a new vehicle just a mid model refresh.

id go for the refresh. Rivian will do what it takes to correct any issues that come up and i'd probably end up kicking myself for getting a pre-refresh if the refresh has a lot of nice updates.

Most that come off the line are solid, even back to my super early Vin. But some are still bad. I suspect same will hold true for a while, regardless if pre or post refresh.

*Knock on wood* but my truck has been pretty darn reliable. Only time it's been in the shop from small quality niggles, oh and the alignment a couple times. Never left me stranded. Very happy with the truck, need more service centers though. 31.5k miles
