Just picked up a 23 R1S in Texas. Car was in sun for about 2 to hours and the air conditioner sounded like a jet engine when we got in the car. It dissipated after a little bit but it was so loud.

Is there a fix for this yet or any ideas on what might be the issue? It didn't seem to do it this morning when we pulled it out of the garage.

Nope, no fix. I added (you can search for my wind noise thread) some sound deadening material in /near the AC area which helped reduce the sound/vibration a bit. But it is still there.

With the Gen2, it looks like the sound is not as much since they moved it.

I'm seeing certain posts that say they have fixes for it. I'm seeing others say it's loose compressor, rattling against housing, turn on turn off compressor, etc.

Also see a lot saying it's normal

It's definitely normal. The AC compressor and fan are mounted in a way that causes quite a bit of vibration when it's very hot out and the vehicle isn't moving. If you start your AC remotely from the app 5-10 min before you leave, it won't be as loud when you drive off. Once you get up to speed or the vehicle cools down, it'll also be very quiet.

I've come to mostly ignore it, as it's still quieter than any of my gas engine vehicles were, even without the AC running.

Lol. Welcome to my demo drive experience with a Gen 2. It’s pretty damn unacceptable for the climate to be this loud INSIDE the car. And if anyone says it’s as loud as a gas car—- you are in denial. Oh yeah, and it didn’t cool the cabin the whole test drive either. It’s the number one reason I’m reconsidering my deposit, since I live in AZ and AC is kind of important lol

Mostly normal. Some things to have checked

1. is the compressor loose and needs tightened to spec
2. Is the refrigerant over/under charged
3. Is there a faulty humidity sensor

It's a much higher pitch sound than a gas engine, but it's significantly quieter than either of my two gas vehicles I've owned. It's about the same volume as a 2.0L Corolla. At least the AC noise goes away after a few minutes.

If your demo vehicle's AC didn't stay cool the entire drive, then there's something wrong with that vehicle. I can park my vehicle in 100F heat and the interior can reach over 135F before starting the AC and it always blows cold.

The noise is normal. Whether it is acceptable to someone is subjective. It's no louder than my Avalanche or my wife's diesel X3. And it's a heck of a lot quieter than our company's Isuzu NPR that had the cats stolen off it. ?

I’m going back and doing another demo soon. Going to request to drive another vehicle (not sure how many G2s they have for demo)

Over two years using the air conditioning and it starts out a bit loud but quiets down once the temperature has been reached. Nothing wrong with it, but sound level is a subjective matter.

The A/C is quiet inside but crazy loud outside the Gen2.

I know I’m a Rivian fan because instead of annoying me, it makes me laugh every time. (I am a simple man.)

When my son turned on the rear AC on our demo drive, I thought there was a compressor where the glove box should’ve been lol

R1S Gen 1. I made a complaint on day one to Rivian about the insanely loud AC compressor (inside cabin noise, not outside). Everyone (4 others) that rode in it said that noise can't be normal and is definitely not acceptable. Tech came out within a week and said it's not normal and they would follow up. It's been 4 months and have not heard a peep from Rivian.

Let’s see…..end of summer, Texas, car in sun for 2 hours. Interior was probably well over 100 deg F when you got in so yeah that AC was cranking as hard as it could at that moment. If the cabin eventually cooled down and the sound calmed down as well I think you’re fine. Exterior sound level of our Tesla MY’s AC is pretty loud when it starts up too. We get our Gen1 R1S tomorrow so Iā€˜ll see how that goes, I’m pretty sure it’ll be similar to OP.
