We have a few upcoming trips planned with the new r1s, the frunk is a little smaller than I hoped and my cooler doesn't fit. I did some searching and didn't really find much so decided to take a stab. I found a engel eng45 that is a short 45quart rotomold cooler. First I will say it's not perfect, but will fit if you remove the lower divider. It sits a little wonky so I will have to build some kind of support box for it to rest on. For now it will work but I'll have to do some work for a better fit. Here is a picture with it sitting in my frunk. I'm pretty sure the hood liner contacts it when it closes which I'm not crazy about if I had 1" of clearance it would be better. I'll keep playing with it to see if I can get a better fit.

From my search all I really found was soft coolers and rugged road which didn't have great reviews and for the price doesn't look all that nice. If the rr was half the price I would have considered it but the engel is a highly rated brand and has a very nice look and feel, I just hope I can get it to fit a little better so it doesn't feel like it's gonna move around.

One thing to keep in mind about the frunk: It can get very hot. I keep a Blue Maestro temperature logger in my frunk to keep track of the temperature - really to learn what I can and cannot keep there while traveling. I was very surprised to learn that it hit 120F while at a L3 charger when the ambient temp was in the mid 40's.

I have been concerned with the internal temperatures the frunk will reach this summer so I'm testing out a theory by covering the frunk compartment with some 2 side metalized, 10 mm, radiant barrier.
When my testing is complete I will post results on this site.

The Blue Maestro Disc Mini Temp works really well for logging temperatures - it downloads the history to your phone whenever you want. The biggest challenge for you will be tracking the ambient temperature so you have a comparison point. Do make a point of including a 20-80% L3 charge in your testing.

The most likely reason for this is that if your battery needed to be warmed up for DCFC, or if you have been driving for a while, or both the front motor was most likely quite warm. If the vehicle was preconditioning for charging, it uses heat from the front motor to warm up the battery pack - it will actually run the motor hot and divert heat to the pack! I don't think there's much insulation between the motor and the frunk.

Good point!
At this point I'm just wanting to find out if the temps can be reduced in the frunk while the truck is sitting parked out in the summer sun.

In my case, using a L3 charger means that I likely just drove for around 200 miles and need more juice to continue on my way, so both things you mentioned were at play. It's really understanding what I can and cannot keep in my frunk while traveling.

Personally the only time my wife and I keep food in the frunk is when taking it back home from the grocery store. Other than that, it's main use is for luggage and camping gear.

i forgot to follow up on this but as others mentioned the frunk heat was a consideration, we decided it wasnt worth the effort and $275 for the new cooler to try to make it work. Ended up returning the engel cooler, put all our luggage in the frunk and used the nice larger cooler we already had in the rear hatch. worked fine and was easier to unload. oh well it was worth a shot haha.

Leasing Model 3 until R3X comes out, but now I have an R2 reservation as well.
I asked a similar question and got some good replies and some unhelpful rote forum ones.
I also asked a similar question about the R2 frunk and barely anyone replied. The R2 frunk seems really shallow and can probably only hold a duffle bag or some groceries. I saw this Coleman Party Stacker Cooler that would fit, but they don’t sell them anymore.

The R2 sub-trunk seems deep, but narrow. Hopefully a 3rd-party company comes out with a custom fit cooler for the frunk. I think that’s what people want rather than using the frunk itself as a cooler. It has a drain plug, but who wants to open and close the hood all the time. Is it actually insulated? I’ve heard people in China use the Tesla Model Y frunk for fishing!
