Regarding tires, most Land Rover (as well as G Class, LX, LC) come equipped with street or high performance tires and would not have gotten stuck in this type of situation.
Weight could be an issue but none of those vehicles are light. Neither is the Y. This could have been caused by user error or any combination of other factors.
Glad you found a drive mode that helped you out.

22s are definitely not great for traction in poor conditions...tried them briefly in light snow last year...ugh. Now I have the 20s for winter and 22s for summer. Right tires for right conditions. Obviously not helpful in this instance but maybe help planning decisions in future. Stick with the Rivian...service will fix your other issues and you'll love the truck!

If the impression is that I was blaming Rivian, that is not my intention. I was merely stating in the same conditions that the Model Y was much much easier to get out of a bad situation. I do think the problem is primarily the weight difference vs tire footprint, and yes, for mud, in this situation, it is the reason the Model Y was "better".

Do everyone here just automatically think the Rivian is superior? Is this forum really that fan-boyish?

To anyone offering genuine advice, I appreciate it. To those just flinging insults, have a nice day.
Did you put it in SNOW mode?

I get what you are saying.....the Rivian does lack at some things, but getting out of this mud should have been easy. Put some sand/rocks in the back of the tires so it can grip. This has happened on our property a few times (not with our Rivian) with my father-in-law Silverdao. Since he is an old farm boy growing up, they didn't have the luxury of tow trucks at a moments notice. He showed me the sand/rock trick and other than 1 time (the truck was up to the running boards deep), it worked every time.

This is another reason we don't take our R1T off roading, I mean....OFF ROADING. We do take it to our in-law's cabin which is off a fireroad and has no issue.

you mean, 'nmud' spelled backwards?

Man I've enjoyed reading through this one. I'm just surprised that we've not got a thread of folks freaking out about the 20%+ drop in RIVN shares and all the cries of "Rivian is going bust, we're gonna be stuck with an expensive car that no-one can fix, ahhhh" ...

The Forum has really grown up. I'm proud of y'all.
The people that are crying are the same people saying "I bought this Rivian car.....how do you charge it at a public charger?"........or "All the public chargers I went to are broken.....good job Rivian"

Rivian was not going in the ruts the Model Y made. I don't blame Rivian for gravity, I do think they made a mistake making such a heavy vehicle for off road. How are my recovery skills somehow perfectly adequate for the Y but somehow disappear when I drive the R1S?

But I see where this is going. Rivian can do no wrong; all dow down and praise Rivian. If there's a problem it must be the driver. Glad I learned this on my first post.
Think it's more like we've seen far too much to the contrary of what you're claiming. We know it's capable.

Sorry, I am not going to read every post here but I will say that my Model Y traction control is so much better than my Dodge Cummins with full locker on the rear and off road tires. As long as ground clearance is not an issue, it is uncanny how much better the Model Y does in the the dry and muddy, quite challenging roads that I traverse from time to time on the Navajo Rez. It rather embarrasses those guys with big 4x4's that have all sorts of "manly" accessories bolted to them as if they drove through Pep Boys with a giant magnet. And before you ask, I do know how to drive. I have worked for years in the Sahara and as well spent many years from the Arctic to Baja and all difficult terrains in between.

Read the room, my guy. Also, why would you make this your first post? ?

Hummm, lemme see - "I'll sign up for a RIvian forum without doing any research and make my first post one 'bashing' the truck. Without posting enough details and without even coming to ask questions, first." Sound about right?

God, I hate people on the Internet. ?

Model Y hands down much better. Same area of mud, same access to traction-aids (wooden boards, which telsa really did not need), My M-Y is out in 5 minutes, and my R1S still stuck after 1 hour. Broken trim, broken steering wheel adjustment, broken A/C vents, inadequate A/C capacity, and a 60-day wait time for service: this vehicle continues to disappoint. When a Model Y with summer tires can out maneuver an "adventure vehicle" in mud, that is really sad.

Yeah...I agree with the AC Vents.

And one of the FIRST things I noticed were those 22" wheels with street orientated performance tires. Looks like there was also a lot of tire spinning based on the caked-on mud on said street tires, on a 7,000lb vehicle. This looks like a case of the wrong equipment for the wrong role.

I spend a lot of time at 6500 feet in the Sierra Winters. You'd be surprised how many times there are SUVs with summer performance tires in a snow banks. Just because you have 4 wheel drive doesn't mean you are invincible. As my day always said, "the difference between 2-wheel drive and 4-wheel drive in the 4-wheeler is stuck twice as hard."

This looks like a serious case of driver error that's blamed on the equipment that wasn't set up for those conditions.
Yes, the 22s are nice for dry/wet paved road driving, but don't try driving on anything remotely slippery with them.

I have to say the Model Y does outstanding in the mud. Before we got the R1T we pulled our 3000lbs 35 ft trailer with the Y through a field of mud similar to OP and I was shocked how well it did. Stock tires but with a 2" lift.

I got stuck on flat ground on aired down ATs, also no sinkage when walking but wet clay underneath the crust.. the problem is absolutely the weight, even with aggressive tread the tires will turn into slicks the moment you start spinning. I was able to self-recover with 4 traction boards and a shovel, but YMMV. The key to mud is momentum, if you slow down you're toast, so keep applying pressure if you're slowing down and keep the steering to a minimum..
