sometimes, eyes need to be open. lol
When I said 600 miles of an ICE without stopping. It is not just on a road trip. It is also in a work environment. Without stopping to fill up. 🙄

Also no one said, to stop making electric trucks. I t it is a good idea to have this add on option. It would bring more sale. Ford CEO has pointed this out.

Welp I'll just go on and say it
I'll be hard pressed to buy another Rivian if they start adding petrol to their lineup of vehicles
I wanted something different and better from a vehicle company that wanted to manufacture something different and better
If I wanted the same ol' same ol' I'd buy from the Big 3
EDIT excuse if I butchered the quote - "I don't want to be another source of wasted carbon"

That must be why Ford makes so many range extenders for the Lightning and have announced so many more... Oh, wait...

No one said it should not be an option in general. Many of us here don’t think it should/ will be an option from Rivian.

Personally I think it’s a silly, overly complex concept in the first place. You are making an “EV” with a smaller battery than a truck that size should have and attempting to add a gas powered V6 “generator” that also helps provide power in *some* situations? And it’s made by Stellantis? Good luck with that…

I love my R1T, but seen the responses on this forum and the extreme reactions happening out there with Tesla. I some time wonder 💭 if the electric movement a cult.

How is driving around a giant 7000lb 135kWh vehicle helping the environment?

A model 3 uses a fraction of the electricity of an R1 and uses far fewer resources to build. Nobody buying an R1 is helping the environment.

Using public transportation and bikes is probably even better.

I drive the Rivian because it's a great product, EV have mechanical advantages over ICE, I can charge for cheap at home. My electricity like most of the country is provided by fossil fuels.

Having more options for EV would help accelerate the US transition away from fossil fuels. In 20-30 years hopefully there's enough fast chargers that a range extender becomes unused and unneeded. Until that time it would be a great option and help the environment. It might not satisfy an extremist ideological crowd.

Ford makes what 2 EVs(lightning and mach e) that are a tiny fraction of their sales? The majority of the public does not want EVs anytime soon. A series hybrid would be a great transition option.

I can see Stellantis screwing up any vehicle.

It's really not a complex design though. Yes EV with a smaller battery, and generator in the hood. It's nothing like as complex as a traditional ICE hybrid since the engine has zero connection to the wheels.

BMW did it fine on the i3 what a decade ago? Would be great to see on a modern fully EV design with a larger vehicle, especially one that could tow.

Having a generator power electric motors has been something they've done with trains for over 100 years back in 1917, so this isn't new tech. About time to do it on a passenger vehicle along with some batteries.

So if people don’t agree with you for valid reasons they are part of a cult? That actually sounds more extreme than any reaction to your question…. Tesla the company is being sabotaged by it’s CEO - not anyone else.

Yeah many or most in the EV crowd are not mainstream.

On one sided you have these ICE drivers that will never consider an EV even if it would be superior for 99% of their driving.

Then you have EV drivers that will never consider that companies product if it helps transition ICE to EV.

Like many things in our country extremists on both sides have taken over from any rational intelligent decisions.

Totally agree. And I believe that day will come. We are seeing all electric heavy equipment more widely available now, and between advances in battery and charging tech we will see larger EVs that are also practical. And there will always be hybrids available for those who don’t want that - obviously the legacy manufacturers aren’t capable of ripping off the band aid.

I disagree that the Ramcharger design is the same as the i3 though. The i3 range extender only kicked in when the battery got low enough and only charged the battery. The Ramcharger description says it can also provide increased power to the motor and gearbox. I’m not an engineer, but that tells me there is a more complicated interface between ”generator” and EV.

When I see the word “innovative” I think “new” and that is a scary thought when it’s coming from Stellantis :giggle:

POWER MEETS RANGE

The All-New Ram 1500 Ramcharger delivers innovative performance with a liquid-cooled 92-kilowatt-hour battery pack paired with a 130-kilowatt generator. The 3.6L Pentastar® V6 engine generates mechanical power, which is converted to electrical power by the onboard generator for maximum efficiency. The generator can also increase the power to the motor and gearbox when serious power is needed.

A model 3 uses a fraction of the electricity of an R1 and uses far fewer resources to build.
There are numerous studies out there showing lifetime carbon emissions are significantly lower than a comparable ICE vehicle....this includes manufacturing the vehicle. It's more realistic to compare an R1 to another vehicle with similar capabilities....not a little compact sedan.

For many EV's are simply a better driving/ownership experience with the added bonus of less lifetime emissions, others focus on the emissions only....to each their own I guess.

Compared to a 3 or Y or any other EV car from any other manufacturer - No - but comparing apples to apples an EV truck is more beneficial to the environment than a petrol truck

Definitely need more public transportation

Same - my area is nuclear, hydroelectric, and coal powered - but those same energies are used to produce petrol energy
Just like the argument that lithium mining is detrimental - petrol extraction is just as detrimental

Agree - Having more EV options will accelerate the transition - Model T were extremist to the horse and buggy crowd

And note I used the word "I" in every line of my original comment - I never implied that anyone else has to follow me or bend to my thinking - I was just expressing my opinion on the situation
