Took delivery of my truck today. Only issue I see is the spare tire lid doesn't easily latch on both sides when I close from the middle of the panel. I noticed it wasn't fully latched when I took delivery but wasn't a big deal. Ive seen the same problem opening and closing it myself a few times today.

If I close from the middle of the lid, the left side latches fine consistently, but the right doesn't fully catch most of the time. This leaves the right side propped up a bit. It makes the bed not flush and then the tailgate cover snaps against the spare lid. That makes a rough sound when closing the tailgate. I can press down on the right of spare lid to get it to lock, but if I close from that side, then the left doesn't catch. Closing from the middle of the lid should latch both sides right?

I can get it to latch but I have to press down on both sides. I haven't opened a service request yet, just seeing if others have experienced this. I imagine it's probably a minor adjustment.

Just a little stiff for me as well. It's made to be weatherproof, so the seal is pretty robust.

I've seen what you're describing happen on almost every single review. I think it's just the way it's designed, and not necessarily a flaw with your particular vehicle (as annoying as it may be).

I noticed this immediately at first mile, and those trucks have surely had the lid closed hundreds of times. Have to slam it pretty hard which is a bit offputting

How often are people getting at their spare tires? This seems like a small problem and not really worth worrying over. Just push down on both sides and you're done.

In the RJ and Sandy vid, even RJ had a little trouble closing it and needed to give it a proper two-handed slam. With that area being designed for spare tire storage, theoretically that lid would be opened/closed pretty rarely.

Yeah, my delivery folks pointed it out to me that two hand slam works best to fully close.

I agree that a hard to close compartment isn't a problem for people using it as a place to store your spare tire.

But for everyone who didn't buy the spare tire and who were hoping to use it as a general purpose storage spot, a finicky door is more of a problem.

Is there anything else important stored in there besides the spare, jack, etc.?

Such as that winning lottery ticket I misplaced?

I'm just curious what would go in there that wouldn't also fit in the frunk, gear tunnel, or under the rear seat. It's not a particularly convenient place to access to begin with.

It's designed to double up as an ice chest for tailgating if you don't have the spare in there. It's water tight with a drain plug. I plan to use it for that.

It's not just you. All R1T's appear to experience this issue, including mine. I'm not going to call it a design "flaw." It's a design feature that isn't really awesome. But it's a minor inconvenience, in my opinion. I'm too busy enjoying all the great stuff to be worried about it. ?

Agree with @cohall which is a mummer since I will apparently need to store my sunglasses and extra drinks in there... I jest.
Looks like we will need to use our early adapter muscles to give a hearty shove.
In all seriousness if it's slightly ajar will it cause damage if it catches the tailgate extender when closing?

Yes, it's been a problem in every review I've seen as well. It will be interesting to see if the community and/or Rivian can find a way to address the issue. That said, I'm expecting this will be an issue for all/most R1T in this first phase (1-2 years) of production.

seems like the gas struts are maybe too strong, or the necessary seal is on the bulky side.

I anticipate just getting used to slamming the thing. NBD, not gonna hurt it.
