R2 12V Battery Location - Photo

Haven't seen anyone post about this yet. The R2 has the 12V battery mounted under the rear passenger seat. The seat is really easy to lift off to gain access to the battery. Seems to be the same kind of SLA battery that's in the other Rivian vehicles, but I did not remove anything to look at it closer.

It looks like the same battery they are putting in R1 vehicles, which would make it AGM.

Too early to decide on doing something different from OEM. They redesigned low voltage system so it cycles a lot less. So it should be better on paper than R1.

Are there any downsides to housing a battery like this inside a passenger cabin of a vehicle that routinely reaches 120° temps? Not concerned about the chemistry for the battery’s sake. I’m thinking about effects of people sharing the same enclosed space.

I think Gen 2 R1’s have the battery in the cabin as well, but first Gen it’s behind the drunk right?

None. Because while the cabin can get that hot, this space is segregated from it and surrounded by insulation and metal. No more susceptible to heat than an 12V AGM that lives inside the engine bay of a ICE car.

I have a hybrid Ford Maverick - 12V battery is in exact same space. Ford put jump/trickle charger terminals under the hood.
Also - the Maverick battery has a vent tube that runs to the outside...

Good question… but considering just about everything man made can be potentially cancerous… no one lives forever?

It's a sealed battery. They puff up when they start to die. They are way beyond dead already if the case cracks open. The chemical you're exposed to when that happens smells like rotten eggs, very obvious.

Usually lead acid batteries that are located in the interior have vent tubes that discharge in the event there's a rare issue. I would assume this one does too.
