Always Michigan plates, but in California. I wonder why they register in Michigan?

Prototype build location and where first driven, thus registered. Pre-production vehicles are shipped to various locations for development/testing.

No. They were built in California. Their validation and prototype line is in Palo Alto.

The new EV Range Rover has been out in the wild testing for what seems like 3 yrs now, Porsche's new EV Cayenne has also been out testing for quite a while with a launch date at least a year away. How does Rivian do it with much less time in prototype stage?

Porsche and Range Rover don't have their companies' entire futures bet on their next EV. Rivian has to get the R2 on the roads in order to have any hope of surviving as a company.

Range Rover and Porsche also are luxury carmakers whose customers have an expectation of polish and quality. Rivian users are, generally, a little more comfortable with and forgiving of small quality issues and growing pains typical of a new tech-heavy automaker.

Yes I understand the urgency of R2 launch...but they also need to get it RIGHT and not just out the door. I'm sure there will be minor issues to flush out when production starts but hopefully no costly recalls and constant need for service visits. Go Rivian!
