I've been using thumb drives on Tesla's for over 8 years with no issues. The only issue\s I recall having were early on in a 2018 Model 3 where there was an odd issue corrupting some stored footage. I believe it was resolved in a software update.

SSD's are using higher grade NAND for sure and better memory controllers, but I think its unnecessary unless you have one laying around. Given the recent price spike on drives, sticking with USB is much cheaper and is proven to work fine.

They are probably better but $100 amortized over the lifetime of the vehicle is insurance I'm willing to pay for.

I get it. I'd pay that too. But I like to live on the wild side. I've been running server software 24/7 on thumb drives for years. No issues. I live based on data and so far the data has proven that it works.

I don't deny SSD's are superior in most scenarios, they are just not necessary.

I've never trusted thumb drives after I nuked 5 of them on a Tesla. I use SSDs now. It's one of those things where $100 now can save you thousands later.

I’m 3.5 years into my R1S with the Samsung thumb drive, never had an issue with it.

Our R2 is only 3 weeks old but with the Lexar thumb drive popped it in it formatted and has worked with no issues.

I just made sure I purchased ones that had high rewrite cycles the Lexar and Samsung both have 3000 write cycles. If it wrote the entire disk every day (it will be nowhere near that) it would last over 8 years before write cycle failures.

Yeah I did too and still burned through them. I'm too paranoid now. It's one of those things when you need it, you really need it.

I’m having the same problem with the T7. Fails formatting and sometimes kills the infotainment system while trying.

So the lexar is working perfectly fine. Formatted once no issue and working.

Applied it last night and it's been aces so far. Not mentioned in the release notes but I think they tweaked the garage door behavior. Previously, I could only get mine to open from the halo wheels (button in the settings worked just fine to close it). Now I can open and close from the wheel.

How does using the halo wheels to open the garage door work? All I've been able to find to open is to hit the vehicle icon on the left (or have it up already), hit the garage button and then the previously added garage. That's a couple of steps too many and it leaves me in the settings menu.

It should present an option on the lower right of the driver display. Push wheel to left to open, right to close. Its finicky though...doesn't work for me all the time.

I need to play with those range settings, which I think determines when the R2 decides that you are close enough to your garage to offer the open option. I don't think I'm seeing it when I pull up to my house.

Like you said, maybe it's just finicky and isn't working consistently.

Yes, I think during setup it asks if you want to use the current gps location for your garage proximity. Maybe you just need to delete the garage from the vehicle and redo the setup process in case that step was missed.

When the option is presented on the screen, with your right thumb push the crime Oreo to the left. The only animation I see is the scroll wheel icon between the X and the door changes from white to a grey scale. There is no need to hold either like the R1 button. That right thumb pushing left action will open/close the garage door.

The X icon is right thumb and pull to the right, all the does is cancel the garage door popup.

I was looking for something on the big display (Model 3 hangover). Today I noticed the prompt behind the steering wheel. I need to go back and try again, but it looked to me like I should push the wheel to the right, not the left like tkauftheil said.

That did nothing, which makes me think I should have been pushing left.

I think I’m in the same boat as you. I agree the graphic shows cancel on the left, open on the right. I guess their interpretation is you push from the right (going left) as if in the R1 series you push the right button.

Seems counterintuitive to me, but as long as I know now I guess it is ok.
