Got it. Thanks. Drove the R1S in Pasadena last week. Too big for my needs, but a nice car. Steering is a little wiggly (I told the salesman that, if it were my car, I'd take it to my mechanic and have him look at the struts). Also, not quite as fast as my Chevy Bolt, but the R1S is a huge beast. (Maybe this was just my imagination or being higher off the ground?) Looking forward to the R2S.

Something wrong the the tester then. The 0-60 for the Bolt is ~6.3 sec. while even the Dual Standard R1S is ~4.5 sec. Major advantage to the Rivian here.

Line order? they may not even go by order of reservation. Look at how R1 reservations and sales evolved overtime as Rivian made and learned from mistakes. You can count on the process to be more like Gen 2 R1 launch:
  1. Buy from existing inventory
  2. OR, don't find anything that you like? Wait your turn to be invited to custom config—and don't whine "when? when? when?" knowing that you chose this path. And once you've made your custom config, don't expect the actual build to begin soon. Production order is subject to batching and based on availability of parts.

Point taken. Perhaps the height difference or the fact that I was driving someone else's car?

Appreciate the advice on buying what's available when it's available. Will do.

I'm hopeful that I might take possession November 10-12, 2026, in Pasadena, CA, assuming I take whatever is available in inventory at that time. Doable, right?

Pretty certain I remember a tweet from RJ that there would be no R2 deliveries on the second week of Nov 2026. I'd start looking for an alternate delivery date.

Just open to those with a deposit or available to all to play with?
We're all just guessing here, but opening the configurator to any interested shopper seems like all upside for Rivian. They will be trying to get more people to place deposits. Encouraging them to play with the configurator should help. Their procurement department might also appreciate some visibility into which options will be popular.

Someone in this string had a theory that this will be more like the R1 2nd Gen rollout, where the vehicles are built to spec and placed in the shop, with no configuration necessary. We just buy whatever Rivian puts in the shop. It's possible, but I would be surprised to see a free-for-all.

1) Demand is much higher than it was for the 2nd Gen refresh. This is more like the original rollout, where buyers may have been waiting for a year or more. If they made a day one deposit, they will want consideration for their loyalty.

2) There may be a service center bandwidth bottleneck. Rivian will want to send vehicles where they can be delivered promptly.

3) They also might want to disperse the early deliveries across the country. It will be beneficial if early R2 deliveries land in many different parts of the country. Rolling billboards.
