I've noticed RAN sometimes only going up to 150kW, even with no other vehicles charging at the location, and a low SOC. (On at least one other occasion I have gotten over 200kW.) 150kW is suspiciously half the 300kW that the chargers are supposed to be able to do, and I notice that chargers are numbered 1a, 1b, 2a, 2b, etc., like the Tesla Superchargers that shared cabinets and would split their maximum power between two chargers. Is this an artefact of the chargers, that they sometimes only give half nominal power, even when no other vehicles charging? I've seen ran limiting to 150kW multiple times now.

There are several factors that can affect your charging speeds.

Battery temp
ambient temp (usually related to charger and cable temp)
available power at the site/stall
faulty charging stall

Since you were the only one there we can probably rule out #3. If you did not pre-condition the battery prior to arrival at the charging site, then battery temp would be the most likely candidate.

If it is an especially hot day, it can limit what your max charging speed is. There is also the possibility that the stall itself has an issue. In the future if you see it again and none of the other mentioned scenarios are present you can try another stall and see if the charging speed issue was related to the one stall.

I agree with the previous post. If you are not in a hurry, you could try moving to a different charger to see if you still get 150kW. If you do, it is likely battery temp and not a charger issue.

I suspect battery temperature. Rivian now posts a message when starting pre-conditioning that states something like "ready for up to 150kw". I saw this when navigating to a charger this summer in the Arizona desert, seems to be something relatively new. My battery always sits around 105-110F in the summer and any temperature above 104 it is going to derate the charge current, that is just how battery chemistry works.

State of charge has a lot to do with it as well. The R1 is not capable of 300kWh but I have seen 220 kWh for a bit when under 35% but does not hold it for long.

Agreed with above. My Gen2 R1S lists “ready to charge up to…” when pre-conditioning the battery for high-speed charging. At first it said it was warming the battery for charging (on a sunny 85 degree day…) which brought readiness from 100kw to 150kw. When it registered that I was going to an RAN specific station, it cooled the battery (instead of warming) and displayed a 200kw readiness. When I plugged in, it indeed hit 200-220.

Pre-conditioning can take an hour depending on battery temp, but makes a huge difference in charge speed. And agreed- 200kw charging speed will hold until about 70%, then speeds steadily decline to 85%, down to about 50kwh above 85%.
