I'm back at the mall in Cheyenne, charging up before heading north to Casper. Still only 3 of 6 stalls working. But no crowd and didn't even have to drop the trailer. I'm thankful this is here.
A couple years ago I was working a contract job at the Microsoft data center up there, commuting from Loveland every day and was extremely thankful for that RAN station being there. Never encountered any chargers out of order during that time, but it happens.

Forgot to mention earlier for anyone passing through, there is a nice little coffee/ ice cream shop inside Jax that is attached to the mall. Also recommend taking 5 minutes to visit the baby chicks for sale in the store!🐄

Keep in mind it's all a balance of time and money. The Rivian team has only opened roughly 20 new sites this year, but converted over 60 existing to be open to everyone. Rivian did have a small round of layoffs about a month ago, a reduction of about 1% of the workforce. So, they are watching their money expenditures.

I liked that RANs were Rivian only. Guaranteed plug and play and open availability. It was a good benefit of being a Rivian owner and with a nationwide network would help make other RV owners become Rivian owners.

Cheyenne WY is open to all EVs... not sure how you assumed it was Rivian only?

The Cheyenne RAN's PlugShare listing says "Rivian Drivers Only," but there's a check-in today (2025-08-03) from a driver who logged into PlugShare as a Hyundai EV driver who was able to charge.

[EDIT 2025-08-04: Based on multiple successful non-Rivian checkins over the last few months, I edited the PlugShare listing to delete the "Rivian Drivers Only" flag. I also alerted PlugShare Data Integrity staff about the correction.]

Both of the two most recent PlugShare check-ins note that some or most stalls are out of order. I would have thought Rivian could detect and fix "out of order" problems quickly.

Best to all!

Plugshare is created and maintained by users, so it’s not the most accurate. I would check the Rivian app or the website map if there’s a station you’re wondering about.

Hi All, I got my erroneous info on that station (being Rivian only) from Plugshare. I think Plugshare is a godsend, but sounds like it was wrong in this case.

In my (several!) posts I believe I repeatedly acknowledged that Rivian has many competing (and valid) priorities, as well as professing my love for the company.

I enjoyed the discussion of the pros and cons of open charging networks (as well as reliability, etc.) But it seems like this discussion has run its course.

Thanks all - peace, I'm outta here.

Just going through the process of explaining that some Tesla chargers are usable, but others aren't confuses people and makes them question the entire EV experience
That is why my pitch is ā€œI tell it where I want to go, and it plans a route -- there are a lot of things that go into planning a perfect route, and it basically does them allā€, and then if I need/want to explain any of the complexities I throw in how the nav system deals with it.

So ā€œyou can charge at most but not all Tesla Superchargers, and the navigator only considers adding the ones that can be used to the route, and only shows them on the map if they are one you can useā€. Or ā€œif you have an adaptor it shows you which stops you need it forā€. Or ā€œsome chargers are not very reliable, the nav ends up with a letter grade for them all, like a charger that always works but isn’t very fast might get a B, or one that has worked fine for years but been a little unreliable recently has a C...and if an A is available you end up with a plan that only uses them, if you have a gap with only B’s it’ll show you those...and I don’t know what has to happen to see a C or D or F on a routeā€.

When installing new stations, spread 'em out.
Sure, if it can be done.

You can’t always get enough power to install a large bank of high speed DC chargers everywhere. So frequently you se EA, Tesla and RANs all in a small corner of a vast area, it is likely that most of that vast area is expensive to get that much power run to. Either some quirk had lots of power run to that small corner, or the first player (probably Tesla) paid to get the utility to route a lot of power in, and when the utility did it they brought in some ā€œextraā€ assuming someone else would want it some day.

a rising tide lifts all boats. Open up all RAN stations to everyone.
Clearly that is something Rivian wants to do otherwise they wouldn't have done it to over half their network so far this year. Unfortunately for whatever reason it isn’t as simple as changing a line in a config file in Irvine, they need to pull out the old dispensers and install new ones. So it takes money and time, which means they balance it against other work.

It may even be that when they come fix the broken chargers they replace them with the newer ones they use for the open part of their network.

(in other words, once again I agree with your goal, and I’m just saying seeing Rivian not get to it yet in WY doesn’t mean they don’t also agree!)
