The CEO said 9 months ago from today they were adding more functionality to the rear screen, I'm assuming this wasn't done yet. Really weird they didn't implement this from the beginning, especially him having kids.

He mentioned it in a QnA on their YouTube channel. He spoke quite a bit on it.

Any updates on this? I was optimistically hoping streaming could be in the future for the kids, but seems like folks have been waiting for a long time. Any difference in screen tech between gen1 and 2?

Can't comment on the technical specifications of the screens between Gen 1 and 2, but it was mentioned a while ago that the rear screen is incapable of the bandwidth necessary to display a video source. I don't entirely believe that, but it also makes little sense to work on displaying media on a small screen between shin and knee height. Most would just utilize a tablet and the vehicles hotspot in the rear seats while driving.

I suppose, mostly it begs the question to me as a Tesla owner as well, what was the point of the added cost of a rear screen if it has no real functionality?

I think the rear screen has plenty of functionality at this point:
  • 2nd row climate control
  • 3rd row fan speed
  • Controls for 2nd row heated seats
  • Audio display and control
  • Compass heading or navigation status
  • Rear outlet control
  • Door lock/unlock
I think I’m forgetting other stuff, but you get the idea.
