I liked the Autonomy+ free trial, but balked at the price to continue. My wife just bought a Subaru Forester Touring hybrid that we just took on a cross country trip. The free Eyesight driving assistance is very similar to the Autonomy+ offered by Rivian at a premium. So here is a car that comes close to Autonomy+ which comes free for a car that costs 40% of of a new R1T. What Am I missing here.

Note that I will not trade in my Rivian for anything, but will not pay for an extra that comes standard on other cars.

My 2020 Ford Explorer had lane maintenance + adaptive cruise control. It basically did 90% of my highway driving problem free. And it was all standard. It was WAY better than the Rivian in this regard. No freaks out or disconnects, just did its thing.

I think manufacturers (particularly for EVs) have found a way to start charging for these features and will likely hide them behind paywalls moving forward. Enjoy the free ones while you can.

The difference is Subaru will update their system when you buy the newer version of their car. Like nearly all legacy OEMs, the tech they have is outsourced from a handful of automotive suppliers. And what you drive off of the dealer lot is what you have for your entire duration of ownership.

Autonomy+ is and will always be in constant state of development and updated on every single eligible car, until Rivian moves on to the next entirely new autonomous architecture and decides to cease development on the “old”. What Autonomy+ is today will not remain during entire term of your ownership. It will improve. And it will improve by leaps once Gen3 and lidar go into the wild to contribute in development of their large driving model.

Also- demanding pricing from what is essentially still a relatively tiny start-up heavily in CapEx mode to any legacy manufacture with far higher revenue (Subaru's rev was ~32 Billion last year) and global reach is not a logical comparison.

Also, in the "what am I missing" category: Subaru Eyesight has been in use and evolving since 2013.

Subaru EyeSight is about the same level of tech as the Gen 1 Rivian "Driver+". Gen 2's Autonomy+ feature set today should be slightly better, with significant improvements over time.

It’s because we all bought into a startup EV automaker. They are trying to make money anyway they can. Soon you will pay for TPMS and heated seats.
We also have a 2020 Subaru Ascent with eyesight. So anytime I see a $50 monthly price tag on something that’s standard on a $40K vehicle, I gag, and remind myself “it’s a startup. It’s a startup… (breathes into a paper bag).

Everything that differentiates an R1T for a Forester? :)

Seriously though, my wife's 2016 3.6 Outback has better lane departure warnings, far better cruise (still!), and better emergency stop than the 2022 R1T.

In general, a really great car for the price and a real joy to drive. Quieter than the Rivian (wind noise). Maybe a better sounding stereo.

But the Subaru sits while I drive the R1T. Far better technically in most other ways, and genuinely more useful day-to-day.

I loved subaru eyesight as well. It's free and in traffic jam or stop and go traffic I found it one of the best so far. Rivian will leave a safety gap of almost car and a half giving other cars chance to unnecessarily merge when that was not the intention. Also rear assist break on subaru is awesome. Rivian I will give 1 out of 10. You will ask me why. OK get a big card board box keep it behind your subaru and back it at full speed and see the results. Now try same with rivian..it will just beep and run over the box. Just imagine if it was kid or a car or something you didn't paid attention to. So I hope rivian is reading these forums and collecting all the data. It can be fixed with software update for sure. I hope it happens sooner then later. At speed of less then 25 mph I will recommend rivian to creep slowly and minimize the gap between the car infront.
