Has anyone heard anymore news on Rivians Bidirectional charging and Vehicle to Home charging that RJ mentioned a year ago? He also mention 800v architecture but that’s been pushed. Just curious as this is a useful feature and many other vehicle manufacturers are adding this feature.

My understanding is that it's a chicken and egg issue with V2H chargers. Here's a post from someone much smarter than I explaining it: https://www.rivianforums.com/forum/threads/when-will-r1x-get-v2h-like-the-lightning.6597/post-171505

We should be seeing chargers like the Quaser 2 coming to market soon and and then in theory RIvian should be able to push a software update to support them. Again this is all theory and we're going to be at the mercy of Rivian to push a software update to support it but in theory Rivian has everything hardware wise to support it according to RJ.

Thanks for sharing that. I’m hoping you right and its just a software update. I was trying to figure that part out because I’m contemplating purchasing a rivian home charger but I’m thinking rivian will eventually release another version that supports bidirectional charging like ford has done. So it’s probably best to wait.

I have heard the same thing about the. I sure hope this update happens soon. It is the biggest issue that IdeaWife is holding out approval for. She has gone so far as to say, "Maybe we should just get a Leaf." Gah!! I could finalize tomorrow if this was released by Rivian.

Not holding my breath. I installed solar last year and really want to add battery storage. Enphase is due to release their 3rd gen battery the first half of this year and I have much more faith in them as a company then I do Rivian in delivering a real product. I absolutely love my truck, but more and more Rivian is becoming a classic overpromise and underdeliver in just about everything they have claimed. My bet is they eventually (2 or 3 years at the soonest), release a proprietary grossly overpriced product that won't work with any other home energy system.

Methinks R1 Quad-Max may get platform upgrades like V2H and 800V, but wouldn't be surprised if we don't see those until R2.

Not saying R2 series will not have that but it will probably be on R1 series first. The R 1 series is the flagship, R2 is the more commodity version.

Think of R2 as being the Tesla M3/MY for Rivian. These are the mass production models that will get them to the high volume growth that will be much needed for long term survival.

Yeah, I expect there to be a major refresh to the R1 platform at some point.. whether it’s before/after R2 release, or will the older R1’s be upgradable, that’s up in the air.

Fair enough, I just wish Rivian would be clear about that feature. So people might hold off

I will be off grid in a couple of years and I want to see DC fast charging between my vehicle and my home battery bank. Or just let me leverage my existing home power inverters by drawing DC from the vehicle instead of the battery bank. I won't need or want an EVSE with its own inverters for household power.

My off grid setup will be slightly under built for my actual battery needs. There will be a few days out of every year where I will be without power. I can run some cooktops from the truck to get by, but my hope is that I will be able to simply drive into town to buy a full tank of electrons to bring home. In the meantime I don't think I'll mind a few days of shelter-in-place "glamping" every year.

It seems likely to me that Rivian will only support V2H with vehicles that have LiFePO4 (lower fire risk, better lifespan). Since those batteries are heavier and less energy dense, I expect to see them in R2 before R1. If Rivian doesn't want to be left out of the V2H game they may have to offer a costlier option for R2 that includes V2H.
