Unless you road trip regularly and know that you typically go more than 300 miles without stopping on a regular basis, or tow over 100 miles on a regular basis, I think the Large Pack will make most buyers more than happy with the performance / range of the battery.
You entirely missed traveling and staying in areas without DCFC. You also missed that a 400 mile truck is a 300 mile truck in winter.

Plus the truck will still be a 300 mile truck at 100K miles.

Definitely also didn't say anything about it not being on an updated version of them. Next gen/refresh is forecasted to start production in 2029.
Ah, the R1T "Millenium Pack" edition. coming in the year 2999

I don't think it will degrade that bad. Rivian's battery warranty is 70% at 175k miles. Guessing most trucks will still have well over 85% after 200k.

I'm more interested as to "when" they will start building/shipping the dual motor version... ;)
This is the question!!! If I got a pre-3/1 deposit on a T and S, then I wouldn’t care. But I didn’t, so the dual might be a viable option for an R1S for my wife. We don’t need the quad motor for her….heck I don’t need it, but I sure love it!

I should have said "At least a 300 mile truck at 100K". The large pack with AT's its already a 290 mile truck. 80% charge is 232 miles. So in summer charging every 150-200 miles. Which is fine for interstate travel. However long distance winter travel in very cold weather is a compromise with charging every 100 miles or so.

For traveling to a rural off interstate area to explore the max pack provides about teice the energy to use in the area. That can be used for driving or camping power. Say a trip is 75 miles in so 150 miles total and a 50 mile reserve. Thats 200 miles out of the range budget before the recreation begins.

I keep coming back to the fact that I think Rivian needs to launch the Max Pack in the R1T to be competitive. While Rivian fills a unique niche now, there are others coming after them like VW re-launching the Scout brand. I just do not see them dropping this, even with all of the other points out there as range anxiety is a large concern coming to EVs. If Rivian does not do it, others will.
Ehh.. the rivian large pack is already very competitive. Even more so with the aero wheels. The reality is everyone is at the mercy of physics and battery chemistry. The new electric VW bus is rumored to have around 250 miles of range. I simply can't imagine the scout (again, vaporware for a long time) exceeding that.

You can only throw so many KWH into a pack before you have to come up with better battery chemistry due to weight and packaging. What's really going to be telling is how the industry props up charging infrastructure and faster charging speeds.

I agree from a physics sense, but physics and marketing rarely go hand-in-hand.

400 miles of battery range is the sweet spot for buyers switching over from an ICE vehicle. Range anxiety is real as buyers don't want to be stranded.

Agreed it's a sweet spot. However with my gx460 - getting 14.5mpg - I'd be lucky to reach 300/350. Personally I think range anxiety is a bit over rated when the infrastructure is there. Then again I have a hard time sitting in a car over 4 hours straight. :)

“Definitely also didn't say anything about it not being on an updated version of them.” o_O

He said it was coming really soon for R1T and R1S. He seemed to mean it. I expect 2023

In the TechCrunch interview RJ said the Max pack will come with new battery and charging tech.

Not really, you're combining two different statements. One about him referencing about 7000 people within the company focused on whats next, from form factors, to updated battery tech and drive units.

Then she asked about Max pack and he said "Yeah sure, more range for that (pointing to the S) and the truck as well."

that was all.... no specifics unfortunately.

Why would they list max pack which the R1S does not offer in a comparison of R1S/T?
It’s compare and contrast. If you’re showing the available range and battery pack options of two vehicles, you should show all available options, no? Same reason why they showed the R1T having a gear tunnel when the R1S doesn't have it; similarly with the mention of fold-down seats of an R1S ??‍♂
