It's not just range anxiety, but the core positioning of Rivian requires more than 290 mile range on AT tires. EVs can't carry extra gas, and there is not going to be that last gas station before heading into a remote area.

Like Wrangler, many Rivian buyers will in reality only be aspirational remote travelers. But to be legitimate in this market segment an EV needs long range and a winch.
I actually took my 4Runner to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon last week for this exact reason. My R1T sat at home in SLC. While it was not showing on the various EV charging apps, the National Park Service had multiple Level 2 chargers I could have used. I would have been fine, but the long stretches from Page to the South Rim and back (plus some trails I wanted to do) gave me enough pause to not want to chance it.

I’d hope the. That that information is provided when delivery window updates go out, to add context to “here’s why the delivery window is much later than you were hoping” I’m girding myself for. I’m ready to be disappointed at the end of the month. THISCLOSE to giving up and cancelling if the news is grim.

part of my calculus was the statement early on that max pack would be built first.
Yeah, but that was said almost 4 years ago, us veterans should know better by now

I've decided on purchasing a Defender if max pack doesn't ship next year. I spend far too much time looking at charging strategy when trip planning. Some aspects cross into humorous. For example, getting to the east entrance of Yellowstone from Chicago in a 300 mile EV is routed through the west entrance of the park. Only a detour of a couple hundred miles and travel through Montana.

Planning on using level 2 charging isn't reliable unless its overnight in a motel that is serious about managing those units for guests. Unreliable "fuel" can't be a primary aspect of a reasonable plan.

I’ve been thinking the same thing. Depending on the news that comes out later this month I may give up on the max pack and look at the Defender. Unfortunately those also have long lead times.

When Rivian gives out production estimates later this month they should have some 1H 2023 max pack builds. If they have pushed all early max pack holders to 2H 2023 then there is a problem. I'm hopeful they a near building some max pack for employees. If max pack includes gen 2 electronics Rivian is going to want some robust beta testing.

Six month for a Defender build when taking a production slot already assigned to a dealer. A blink of an eye compared to the first Rivian preorders.

If the large pack performs as well as the Ev kona I’m driving now. Then that’s good enough for me. Sure it would be nice to not have to stop to charge when going to visit my parents and go atving around the area they live in but if it can do it while just stopping once like the kona can then that’s acceptable for me. I think I could probably make it on a single charge but I haven’t had the guts to try it lol

If, after having waited this long, I get a delivery estimate that is a half year window, I won't be impressed. Testing or not, part of me is burning out waiting.

Ideally, I'm hoping they give me a 3 month delivery window, and an update as to what we can expect from the max pack and any differences that will set it apart from other trims (outside the obvious range)

I thought about holding out for a max pack, but have decided to go large and keep an ICE also. I prefer to get delivery this year so I know I’ll get the tax rebate, I don’t have to “hope” the letter of intent will work in 2023. I think that a large pack will cover 90% of what I want, while a max (in ideal conditions) is “only” 100 more miles (maybe less with 20” ATs), would cover 95% of what I want. Does it make sense for me to keep a second car to cover that extra 5%, for me it does.

The same was being said when I placed my deposit in the middle of last year

That sounds entirely reasonable. Are you sure you’re in the right place?

I originally pre-ordered a Max-Pack pre-price change/reversal. But when they changed their plan and decided to not make Max-Pack first, I changed to large pack.

While I was not excited about the delay, one of the reasons I changed to large is that Rivian never made it clear how payload was affected (or not) by the Max-Pack.

For quite some time now I've been of the opinion that the Max Pack will indeed be built with 800v, new dual motors, and maybe even different battery tech.

There is a Youtube video of RJ interviewing an engineer of the new motors saying they could get up to 600hp. So they might be able to keep a dual motor's performance the same as now. But with a weight reduction to offset the increased battery that would otherwise reduce payload.

The question for me is, "If they announce the new Max-Pack specs/tech will I, as a pre-March order holder be able to switch back to Max-Pack at the old prices?"

While still Max-Pack, my delivery window was 2H-2023. The next few weeks should be interesting in any case.

i think you being in Vancouver are likely to have the latter outcome. The former is likely for me here in the middle.

They should be able to accommodate that change.

I reserved a Dual Motor R1T, just for shits-n-gigs. I'm curious to see what the performance specs will bring with the two larger motors; added range is nice, too.
