My Rivian home charger, installed December 2023 , 60 A breaker went off earlier this morning and it will not reset to "on" position. I had set R1T, 2024 quad large batt, to charge to 75% for a 500 mile trip starting today. The truck stopped charging at 70%. I did the most recent software up date about 48 hours ago and this was the first charge attempt since then. Rivian service said to have electrician check the home circuit out, unfortunately that can not happen until next week. It does charge using the portable charger on 110. Rivian unsure if cause is vehicle, home charger or home circuit. No guarantee from Rivian that trip possible. I did not find any post similar to this. I am still learning about the electrification process, so I thought I would post to see if anyone had any thoughts on this. My wife is loading the Subaru. Thanks

I’m no electrician, but it sounds like an electrician will have to solve the problem. Breakers trip before there is a serious issue. They will need to see what caused it to trip and determine why it won’t reset.
I would pull the panel cover just to see if I can spot anything, but that’s not usually advised.

I’ve had my Rivian charger fail to charge a couple of times, but it has never tripped the breaker. After resetting the breaker a time or two, it has always returned to normal. Did you try charging at a lower amperage? I’m assuming, with the 60 amp circuit, you are charging at 48 amps. I’m wondering if a drop to say 32 amps, or even lower, would make a difference.

If you can remove the two safety torx from the bottom of the charger and open it (careful with the cable that connects the front with the back, it's easy to tear away) and send an picture, I might be able to see if there's anything obvious.

I just hard-wired mine last weekend and I used to work as an electricitian like in my previous life ?

I know you said that the breaker is already in the open position, but please just double-check that there's no power going to the charger when opening it ?

Also, breaker will not reset to "on" position. I could not try another charge setting.

IMO most likely problem is the installation, second most likely is something shorted in the charger.

Like @mudito suggested, if you can open the cover to take a look it might be obvious if something shorted out inside. Or just smell it - if something shorted you should be able to smell it.

Yes, I would definitely have the electrician come out and take a look - use the same guys that installed it and if the breaker is defective or something is wrong with the installation then they should replace it for free.

If there's a problem with the charger, Rivian will replace it and pay for the new install.

This sounds most like a failed breaker. Without electrical knowledge and at least a meter, there’s nothing you can do. But why not just charge at a public charger?

Just to be clear: you did this with no load on the breaker other than an idle charger - i.e. the car is unplugged? That will rule out the car completely -- well almost (consult me after class for the one out).

I would do that, and then wait for the electrician.

Breakers can go bad. That one probably did and will need to be replaced.

I’d go to a commercial charger and see if the vehicle will accept a charge. I believe you have a faulty breaker.

that’s what I would do.

keep us posted

Electrician came out. One of the wire connections splicers was loose. The wire was very loose, pulled out with gentle pull by hand. He replaced the splicer, torque calibrated all connections and the charger is working fine again. He found nothing else wrong with installation. He has replaced several Rivian chargers in the past year.
