Rivian R1T Gets Ceramic Coating, Window Tint, And PPF

I struggle with $6,000. You can repaint the thing for close to that. I can see doing the front bumper for obvious reasons. For those that go off-roading, then doing the sides would make sense too. But still, $6K is a lot of money. I know, already spending $80,000 to buy it.

I'd only consider this if I wanted to do a vinyl wrap to change the look of it in a different color. Then it's a good option, certainly when considering the cost and value of repainting in a different color.

PPF is a must here in CO otherwise road rash will sand the front edges down from regular winter driving. Roughly $2k to PPF front third hood/grill/headlights/a pillars/behind wheels. As was done in this example, you can also add window tint for a good combined price. We’ve used both 3M and Xpel for PPF.

On new cars that hopefully do not require paint correction, it is an easy DIY to apply ceramic coatings, which usually last 2+ seasons and cost less than $250. I’ve used Gtechniq, 21Ple, CQuartz all of which have done well.

I really like the vinyl blackout of the silver pieces. I may do that on mine, though I'd be very concerned that the front skid plate wrap would just get torn to shreds, since I do intend to offroad with mine. Maybe best to leave that one unwrapped rather than have to have it redone probably yearly?

I like the window tint too - I may consider that as well, though sun isn't usually much of a problem here in the NW.

I also would love to know what the total cost was on that project. I've not gone through that process with a vehicle previously but I'm sure it'll be totally worth it for the R1T, again, given that I intend to take mine offroad quite frequently.

Modesta puts their own lifespan of 3-10 years. I’m assuming it wears off when used sort of like RainX. No way I’d be paying that kind of money to reapply every few years. Now I love the vinyl but I’m also very worried about the lifespan on that. In my hot af Florida sun I expect it to start bubbling in a similar amount of time. I haven’t had a tint on a car since the 90’s so maybe the tech is a lot better now?

That's not bad. I'd totally drop 6k given that I'm priced over 80k atm on my R1T. Will definitely pay resale dividends if it protects from some of the scratches I've put on my Defender (only the front is PPF'd and I've definitely put branch marks along the sides).

Zero chance you get your $6k back in resale from that.

I live In Colorado and have never done anything but tint. Maybe it’s because I keep my cars 12-15 years so the resale value is pretty low anyway.

Dunno but it has to be a strong majority. We also replace windshields every 3-5 years if not from cracks, from road rash. Especially if driving the mountains and for regular skiers.

Probably less than 5%. But I think it's exponentially linked to the value of the car. It's become popular to protect luxury cars when they are brand new and/or valuable vintage cars. For a 911 GT3 or similarly valuable sports car I would probably do it - those cars actually have the potential to appreciate in value and the benefit of protected paint is more important.

For a truck, I don't think it's worth the money. I don't mind nicks and scratches (I will be using it as a truck after all).

But if you are someone who is fastidious about your cars, PPF is a good option. The high end stuff is kind of magical with its "self healing technology".

Here's a question: Will PPF still pick up brush/scuff marks like you'd get from driving your truck on a narrow trail (folks called it 'pin striping' in another conversation. Or does the PPF still get the same marks, but keeps them off the paint.

If it gets the same marks, can they be taken out the same way they can be taken out of paint.

It will likely still get some marks but will keep the paint safe, and most of the high end PPFs will self heal in the sun (or with a hairdryer/hot water).

Got quoted $3,500 for full front PPF, ceramic coating, and tints. Not a bad deal.
