Exactly, they stalled till they missed the boat. Now they need to wait for next one - Rivian or some other company.

I suggest Rivian rent the property to the Insane Clown Posse for a permanent “gathering of the Juggalos” and the local residents will very quickly be begging Rivian to build the largest, dirtiest, noisiest factory they have ever seen.

A friend of mine bought property (50 acres?) for his workshop and a bike short-track, both of which were zoned and legal. Neighbor - very far away, at that - threw a fit. Friend offered to instead build out a pig farming operation, which was also very much zoned and legal. Neighbor laid off after that.

Agreed but residents in all states can be NIMBY - California is a great example.

Pausing Georgia is the best decision Rivian has made. Save the cash, and utilize Normal Ill to its full capacity. Get the R2 & R3 production up and running in the factory you already have, then when cash positive, resume Georgia.

The only reason I disagree is that would just give the NIMBY assholes the win. Unless they turned around and sold the land to a battery manufacturer....

Sadly I have to agree that all the legal battles Rivian had to go through helped to put them in this position.

I understand why some of y’all want the Georgia plant abandoned because of the NIMBY’s, but that would just be Rivian cutting off its nose to spite its face. If they moved to another location, they’ll quite possibly run into the same thing again. They’ve also made good progress on the site prep and construction should be started pretty quickly once they give the green light.

Site prep/earthwork is one of the highest cost elements in construction. Moving dirt around is very expensive, and it is very safe to assume that Rivian has a buttload of money already invested there. They'll button it up right now, but they will be able to move fairly quickly once it is greenlighted.
