From our friends at reddit.

Anyone hoping for any major news will be disappointed. This one didn't include much beef.

Also - nothing new on Tonneau Covers except that components are being shipped mid-summer to SCs to address existing vehicles with issues which are being prioritized.

Aren't we past mid-summer at this point? Asking for sanity purposes...

Weekly Rivian Responds + Roundup: Small updates on a calm Sunday [7/30/2023]
Hello Rivianfolk,
Happy Sunday! Hope you're having an excellent end to your weekend. How many times have you driven your friends / family to Barbie or Oppenheimer since the last Rivian Responds? For me it's four times. Anyways, let's get into it!
Subreddit Updates
  • Our Discord has 2k members! Don't forget to pop over there if you're looking for an active community to chat with.
  • Friendly reminder that we have a place to discuss the Rivian ticker at r/IVN. In general, I think it's a moderate success! If you're dying to discuss financial stuff and speculate, that's your place - moderated by your r/Rivian mods.
Weekly Rivian Responds
To get your questions answered, comment below within 48hrs of this post going up.
Please remember that Rivian is a publicly traded company, so you may not get the detail you want about upcoming product, feature, or software timelines. Of course always ask what's most important, but for more detailed answers, try to ask questions about vehicle capability, choices already made (eg, design), or about the company in general.

  • Any plans for bringing the under-dash 12v port back?
    • We don’t plan on bringing the 12V outlet back to the cabin of the R1T or R1S at this time.
  • Any updates on the redesigned (and hopefully backward-compatible to already-delivered R1s) wireless charging pad?
    • We don’t have any updates on the wireless charging pad at this time but will update the subreddit when we know more!
    • Mod Note: This is the third time in the past two months that this question was asked. We're happy to keep passing top questions along to Rivian, but just wanted to point it out.
  • When will the powered tonneau cover be reintroduced to configurator?
    • While we don’t have a timeline to share on when powered tonneau cover will be configurable, we can confirm that updated powered tonneau components will be shipping to Service Centers mid-summer to address any R1T owners experiencing issues. Our first priority is vehicles already on the road.
  • Some users have noticed data transfers from the vehicle even while it’s parked at home. What data is collected and uploaded when the vehicle is stationary at home?
    • Vehicle logs are collected while the vehicle is in operation and stored until they can be uploaded. This vehicle data is collected for multiple purposes depending on the driver’s preferences and privacy settings and is used to support continued vehicle performance, improve safety features and for predictive maintenance and diagnostics. These vehicle logs are typically uploaded once the vehicle is parked and connected to Wi-Fi. Also, when the vehicle is plugged into a charger, the vehicle may collect data related to the charging session. That data is also uploaded if the vehicle is connected to Wi-Fi while charging. To learn more, you can visit the Vehicles and Charging sections of Rivian’s Data Privacy Notice.
  • What additional features can we expect to see for the Rivian Wall Charger?
    • We’ll be sure to announce any new features on the Rivian Wall Charger as they roll out.

Thanks for sharing here. They had said replacements would start in late summer, which I assume now means September. Therefore reaching out to customers in August to schedule replacements. New builds probably won’t get it as an option until Q1, maybe when they shut the plant down for a week to make the other changes (originally planned for Q4) such as the wiring and computer changes.

Thanks for sharing although you are right, nothing there to see.

As for summer 2023, assume it is in thirds

Summer 2023
  • began Wednesday, June 21
  • ends Friday, September 22
93 days so mid summer would be days 32-62 or 7/23/2023-8/22/2023

Probably need some sort of Rivian adjustment though so maybe days 2-91? ??

Omg we’re back to this… Rivian gives a broad timeline to not get locked in and the nerds break out their abacus to calculate the precise second a response is required and will sell all stock and yellow logos if they don’t hit it on the dot!

By my math, many have had these things for more than a full year, with a high cost option, that does not work, and Rivian does not have a solution for. No abacus or precision needed......we are WAY PAST reasonable on this topic. Rivian has only been trying to reduce expectations by even putting dates on this in the first place.

So I was being jokey above but this is a wild comment. Rivian has presented a new powered tonneau cover solution so saying it doesn’t exist is plainly false. And setting expectations helps to reduce expectations? Say what?

I appreciate that folks are frustrated and have and anticipation and desire for more insider info, but the cover was officially 86’d in early to mid November and the new real actual not fake solution was posted in Mid May. 6 months is pretty impressive IMO! Considering the state of service centers I’d be blown if broken covers get fixed this summer.

It doesn't exist until all the people who have had a malfunctioning one for the better part of a year have their product they paid for working properly. If they didn't want it to work they shouldn't have sold it. They did, so as far as I'm concerned it doesn't exist until it's working.

I'm a pretty big cheerleader for Rivian on this board, usually getting snarky over things like panel gaps or the accelerator making a clicking noise or something, but the tonneau was a major feature and a big selling point for many people. A fair number of those same people have had a broken one for far too long at this point.

I am in 100% agreement with you. I am still waiting to get my truck because I refuse to accept that I won't be able to even get the power tonneau if I take delivery of one without it.

This feature was too important to me and Rivian really has just really dropped the ball on the redesign. The lack of information is just extremely frustrating.

The thing that I don't understand is what is the hold up with getting the redesign into the configurator?

At this point, supply chain should not be preventing them from having the necessary parts to be able to start building these. The SCs and the Factory are not mutually exclusive. You can take care of Rivian owners who have broken tonneau covers by repairing them while introducing them into production at the same time.

My Guide speculated that they wanted to see how the redesign worked in vehicles they are replacing the cover on. Huh? They have had nearly a year from when they pulled them from production. They couldn't redesign and test in those 10 months? They are waiting to do field testing in actual owner vehicles?

Given the backlog at SCs - how long will it even take to do that? Years?

We are all early adopters. This is the main price you pay to be an early adopter - and no, waiting a year for a fix isn’t “beyond early adopter”. If you’d prefer to wait, you could have. Those who have the broken power tonneau - that sucks, but at least you’re driving your T. You could easily sell it, likely with no loss, and wait for the new tonneau if that’s your big need.

Don’t mean to sound unsympathetic, but I’ve had sub 500 VIN Tesla S and X and they both had plenty of issues.

Personally I'd like to hear what they have to say about progress on further ABRP Nav integration, Driver+ improvement, or any comments about or acknowledgment of the AC issues reported by some number of R1S owners. They might not chose to address those if asked, but I think they're reasonable questions.
