Rivian's Registration Ineptness

48 different states to register within would certainly pose challenges. But the number of instances I read on forums sure is a pattern.

Is the R learning from their past mistakes and improving the process? or is it a passive aggressive way to slow down flippers?

Rivian contracted this out to General Systems Solutions:

I agree that this contractor's performance is less than optimal. I almost had to stop driving my Rivian and got what I needed (shipped from General Systems...which is how I knew about them) at close to the last minute.

General System Solutions = RegUSA = Dealertrack.

Same parent company and same issues for Carvana buyers apparently. The writing was on the wall with this one (RegUSA) if you read BBB reviews and other complaints prior to Rivian delivering their first vehicle.

Took 4 months, a rental car, hours on the phone tracking stuff down, and hours at the DMV. Rivian, naturally, blamed TX DMV but DMV confirmed they never received any documents from either Rivian or RegUSA. I ultimately self-registered and ate the 5% late fees caused by their ineptitude. I was just glad to finally be able to prove I legally own and drive the vehicle that I waited over 3 years for.

Add to the DMV title and registration delays, the fact that Rivian also is foot dragging on transferring owners in a resale.

In this case, the title/reg/tags have occured via the DMV but Rivian has passed the buck to three different “departments” for the ownership transfer. Once they have proof including bill of sale, new title, etc it should be an OTA.

I got lucky in WI and received my registration and plates in about two weeks.

Seems it really depends on the state.

Apparently, Rivian waits a week to submit the registration in case the buyer takes advantage of the return policy. That said, mine was quick, also in WI like the above poster.

So maybe it was because I was sorta early(ish) on delivery, but I got my plates and such like two weeks before my temp expired

Got my registration (and title) 12 days before the tag expired. Kept my old plates from my last vehicle, put them on the same day. South Carolina. Nice to be legal again. SC requires registration within 45 days.

Colorado. Delivery occurred on 6/28. Temp plates expiring in two days. My guide has gotten an extension on the temporary plate and is fedexing it by tomorrow.

WA state. I got mine about six weeks after delivery. Long before I needed them. Just adding another data point.

I hope they do. My guide fed me that line for 3 weeks before they eventually got me a rental. Extended temp plates showed up about 5 weeks after my original ones expired.

Ouch, sorry to hear that. I did get the email from fedex last night so it looks like the extended temporary plates are indeed in the mail.
