I'm thinking of getting my local small-town tire store to rotate the tires on my R1T. Is there anything tricky about lifting the truck? Can they damage it if they do it wrong? Can they figure it out?

I'm actually talking about lifting the whole truck. Do they need jackpucks for that? Is that something they would have?

That is why "FooF' noted, "You will want some jackpucks to keep in the truck.". You need those to lift the R1.

Many places do not have the pucks, which are required per the documentation.

Yes they need jackpucks or they need to remove the plastic panels so that they can access the frame.
Read the manual and watch some videos and provide the shop clear instructions and jackpucks.
Or don't and come back here to complain when your truck is screwed due to your laziness.

This is what happened when someone took their truck to a shop without jackpucks.

Yes, as other posters have stated you will need jack pucks, and for that reason alone, we built our magnetic jack pucks. We've sold thousands to fellow Rivian owners. Always in-stock, ship same day. You can take the pucks to any tire store for changes, rotations, and use them for road side repairs with a bottle jack as well.

Appreciate the "shop local" mentality but if you at all have access to an America's / Discount Tire I HIGHLY recommend doing it there instead. These things aren't easy to lift and would not trust anyone that hasn't done it before. Not only do they already have the pucks, 90% of the time they will do it for free.

Check out the service section for tire change.

You can remove each of the plastic panels to expose the correct lifting points but getting four jack pucks is better (IMHO) because:
  1. Removing each panel takes 5-10 minutes of futzing
  2. Even after removing the panels there is a chance the lift operator will want to default to putting the arms under something else (which could be really bad)
  3. Forcing the lift operator to use the jack pucks means he/she will need to put the arms in the correct spots

Regardless of who you use, be present when they start. I used Discount Tire, with an excellent 10 year record of using them. BUT one of the two techs didn't know what he was doing and wasn't listening or watching the other tech. When he put the puck on a bolt visible on the underside, I said no that's not where you put those. the other tech came around and showed the little round doors to open to use the pucks in.

EXPZ in and out in 30 for a rotation and balance with a patch on one tire for almost invisible finishing nail. Love Discount Tire, but always watch the start of every car I take there.

Love our JackPucks!

When our Costco wasn't confident about lifting and service procedures, Mark from JackPucks (who goes by @Mark_AZR1T on this forum) supplied enough instructions to help them get confident. The work went well, and the car seems to be undamaged.

@jwanderson88: What's your vehicle worth? Please don't take chances with untrained mechanics' first Rivian experience!

@FooF said you can remove some large underside panels to access the frame. Trouble is, many report that the retaining clips tend to break during this maneuver. I would remove the underside panels only in an emergency situation.

Bottom line: Jack pucks, and instructions from some reliable source, are very much needed for safely lifting a Rivian. Mark's JackPucks brand appears to be the most trusted at this time. I have no conflict of interest. Just a happy customer.

Very best wishes! Enjoy your Rivian!

Thank you for the kind words! I'm glad it worked out well for you and it's good to know your local Costco is now a solid source for Rivian owners in your area!

Like others have said, carry your own jack pucks. the underside of the truck is covered with plastic panels, which will be damaged without them. And don't just ask if they have them. Tesla, BMW, Rivian pucks are all different. They may say they have pucks, but don't count on them being the correct ones. When Tire Discounters said they had 'em, they were for Tesla. Also, their lift had rubber pads, and my pucks tended to slide off the worn rounded rubber. Watch everything closely !

I would recommend having a set of puck in your truck just in case they think that they can use another brand of pucks. Also, when they are finished make sure to secure the lift point covers. I lost one because I did not realize that mine were not secure until I got to soccer practice and retrieved a ball from under my truck.

Also, I have found limited places to get the 21" tires.

I brought my set of JackPucks (Mark_AZR1T) to a local tire shop (not DT/Americas Tire). I showed them the jack points (opened the flaps with a flathead screwdriver) and explained that the pucks must be used in correct locations to avoid damage to the panels.

Then I watched to make sure they used the pucks and correct lift points…time well spent in my opinion…hopefully DT will fix the damage and make sure anyone working on Rivians has the training/experience to properly lift them…

I called a local tire shop to install my new wheel and tire combo, but they wouldn't touch a Rivian. I explained I had the magnetic pucks to lift it safely, and they refused. I then asked if they could just use a floor jack with the pucks one wheel at a time, and they still refused. My EV Sportline bottle nose jack just showed up, and I'm installing them myself today. My concern is when I need to rotate, there is no option except to lift with the puck and remove the molding for the jack stands. Such a pain in the ass.
