Hello everyone,

First off, thank you so much for all the valuable information shared on this portal—it's been incredibly helpful and my go-to source for everything Rivian. I recently purchased a 2025 Dual Motor R1S with the Large Pack and need some advice on home charging. I already have a Tesla home charger in my garage for my Model 3, and while Rivian is offering free adapters (if you opt-in) to use Tesla chargers with the R1S, they’re back-ordered by 3-4 months.

In the meantime, I’ve looked into aftermarket options like the Lectron Tesla to J1772 EV Charging Adapter. However, when I checked with Rivian customer service, they informed me that they don’t certify any third-party adapters and that using one could potentially void the warranty.

Currently, my options are to use the 120V AC charger or the 240V AC charger (which comes with the vehicle). The 240V option would require installing a NEMA Type 6 outlet in my garage.

If anyone has faced a similar situation, I’d love to hear your thoughts and advice!

Use the J1772 adapter, they're fine. Nobody certifies them, they won't void the warranty.

The Rivian-supplied adapter is only for using Tesla Superchargers, the DC high-speed chargers, they don't work with AC chargers like at home or at most hotels.

I have the Lectron one you linked to. It works just fine. Although I've only actually *needed* it one time in the past two years, when I stayed at a hotel that only had a Tesla destination charger for overnight Level 2 charging. And since that hotel was 200 miles away from any DCFC charger (both CCS and Tesla), my trip wouldn't have been possible without that overnight charge.

You can use your level 2 Tesla charger at home with your Rivian if you get a Tesla to J-1772 adapter like the A2Z Stellar Tesla to J-1772 adapter. This is the same adapter you will use for Tesla destination chargers commonly found in hotels / Parking lots / Shopping centers and Airbnb. This is a much better option than using level 1 charging.

You will need the DC Level 3 Typhoon Pro adapter to charge your Rivian at eligible Tesla Superchargers.

You can bundle the A2Z Stellar AC Level 2 Tesla to J-1772 adapter for $75 additional after discount by using the drop down on the Level 3 Typhoon Pro adapter page to get both adapters or you can buy just Stellar adapter to start charging your Rivian at home using your Tesla home charger.

You might have to update the setting for non-Tesla compatibility on your Tesla home charger.

Feel free to use the below links or forum discount code "RIV" to save on products sold on A2Z website and get free shipping.

Tesla To J1772 adapter (Tesla Destination Charger for Hotels / Shopping centers) | Up to 80A | 20kW | 12 Months Warranty

TYPHOON PRO | NACS DC CHARGERS to CCS1 Adapter | 500A | 1000V | DC | 12 Months Warranty

I've used this one a dozen or so times with my Tesla UMC. No issues, no throttling. It feels very well made. IMO these adapters are not worth spending big bucks on. They have no electronics and are not carrying the same power as a CCS adapter. Even Tesla's own J1772 >> NACS adapter is only $50.

Brit Dollar, are you sure the adapter from Rivian is 3 to 4 months backordered? I got my adapter within 2 weeks of picking the vehicle up. I think they've caught up with the backlog and are now quickly filling current orders.

If that's the case, I guess everyone who took delivery between June 2023 and June 2024 is just kind of screwed on adapter delivery and will be delayed even further if new vehicles are actually being delivered with adapters.

We picked up our R1S on August 23, 2023 and just got the notification that our Rivian adapter is ready to be shipped. I think they're catching up and, sadly, new sales are slow enough that they can provide those quickly.

To be clear, the adapter that now ships with Rivians is NOT what OP needs to charge at home. The one that Rivian is sending out for superchargers is for DC charging, not AC charging at home. It will NOT work at home.

Yup, based on my verbal communication and sms chat with Rivian(see attached pic) I understand that the NACS adapter for super charging is estimated to arrive no later than Jan 2025.
If they have caught up with their orders, then that's a good news.
