Just crossed 60k miles on our 2022 Launch Edition R1S. After reading a post from @RickRossTheBoss, I decided to spend the $250 on the comprehensive inspection before the warranty expired. I scheduled it with about 100 miles left on the 60k warranty, and it definitely paid off.

Covered under warranty:
  • Replaced left rear and right rear upper lateral links (ball joint play)
  • Replaced left and right rear damper (leaking)
Other than a $2,250 windshield replacement, we've only spent about $250 on the vehicle in 60k miles.

The service center was great. Quick communication, got us in early because the warranty was about to expire, and the suspension feel noticeably tighter now.

Thoughts on the Gen2 Dual Motor Performance Max Pack loaner:
  • Higher-resolution cameras are a nice upgrade.
  • Autonomy is genuinely useful—I’ll miss it going back to my Gen1.
  • The throttle in All-Purpose mode felt much less responsive than my Gen1. Maybe another drive mode would help, but I wasn't a fan.
  • Ride quality felt about the same.
  • Kids loved the push-button door release.
  • Adaptive Matrix headlights were excellent, especially for spotting deer on the edges of the road.
  • HVAC was quieter and seemed to cool the cabin more effectively.
  • Efficiency was noticeably better on my comparable commute (photos below).
After a week with the Gen2, I actually felt less urgency to upgrade. Efficiency and autonomy would be the two big things that could convince me. The efficiency gains are impressive, and they give me confidence Rivian can achieve the R2's efficiency targets.

Ohio's franchise laws mean our service centers can't demo or sell R2s, but I did get to see my first one in Catalina Cove waiting for customer delivery. It's a great-looking vehicle, and I'm still torn between keeping the R1S a while longer or moving to an R2.

Felt the same after getting multiple gen 2 loaners while my 22 R1t was in service. Wish I could combine the things I love about my gen 1 with gen 2. Hoping gen 3 is that

I have never scored a Gen 2 loaner in ATL or Franklin. Can't recall seeing a Gen2 loaner for that matter. Maybe that will change in a couple of weeks when I take our R1S in for service if they have to send me home without ours.

@oliv3r Is this your R2? I should've taken a picture of the VIN, but was in a hurry.

Not sure, I don't have a VIN or anything scheduled yet. This was at Cleveland or Columbus service center?

Thanks for sharing the efficiency comparison, it's really helpful. I just got a Gen 2 R1T and am glad to hear that the throttle feel wasn't something I was doing "wrong". Do you mind if I ask what the windshield replacement was for? I think I acquired a very VERY small chip in the lower passenger side while driving around and I'm torn about trying to get it repaired or replacement or just leaving it.

I had a Gen 1 R1T quad and now a Gen 2 R1T quad. The difference in the throttle in all-purpose mode was noticeable at first. then I put the new quad in sport- and it made my Gen 1 feel (almost) sluggish. Point is, I quite like the "contained" driving of the Gen 2 in all purpose, and when I want/need the power- sport mode it is :)
Ride quality is noticeably better (though my gen 1 had improved significantly after numerous service visits), cameras are excellent, I enjoy and use UHF often, and am a big fan of the matrix headlights. HVAC is cooler inside the truck but seems louder outside (in the Gen 2 vs Gen 1 which was the opposite). Efficiency thus far about the same though I've only had the Gen 2 since end of last year.

I should've taken a photo, but it got hit by a rock on the highway in the bottom left corner and the point of impact caused a very large bullseye and by the time my wife got home it went the entire way across the driver view up to the rearview mirror.
Strongly recommend getting it repaired/patched asap if you can and hopefully that will be enough to hold it off from spreading for along time. $2250 for a replacement is insane!

Edit: On throttle feel - I wish I would've spend some time with the other drive modes to compare feel and whether it could be made to feel more similar, but I was most interested on efficiency so I kept it in AP for the 5 days we had it and it was significantly better.

Good to hear that sport "fixed" it for you, as I suspected it might. I kept in AP because I was most interested in efficiency and it was very significant for my case.
I could probably get used to the AP feel on the Gen2, it was just surprising how different it was.

Ride quality is different between the R1T and R1S in general, but most of what I have heard would validate your experience, though it definitely was not noticeable in my few days with it, whether highway or terrible back country roads/lanes.

HVAC was quieter inside and out for me. Parked in the garage my Gen1 sounds like a jet engine taking off, though I have heard others validate what you have experienced.
