So I’ve been looking at the R1S for a while and I love the way it looks, as well as what I’ve seen it do. That said, I’m curious what everyone’s experience is with the frequency of issues that prevent drivability or require a service center visit?

I’m in south central PA and the closest service center (currently) is in Gaithersburg, MD, which is 2 hours away. For the reason, I’m a little concerned with how any frequent issues might derail my ownership experience.

That said, otherwise the size, design, range, performance and cost effectiveness fit my lifestyle better than other EV’s.

So I’d love to hear opinions/experiences on ownership.

Not R1S but R1T owner since June of 2022 and for 50000 miles here.

In 2 years, I had no issues with the truck that prevented me from driving it.

Yes, there were different issues the service center took care of; however, they always, I repeat ALWAYS, messed up other things that required either mobile service or service center visits to fix.

My truck has a history of 19 service tickets already, and only 5 were for things that got broken and needed to be fixed or replaced. Everything else was service calls to fix issues technicians messed up during the service.

Today is the beginning of week #6 since my truck has been at the service center, and only 1 week was used to fix the actual issue. The rest of the time, they are waiting for parts to replace things they messed with.

Otherwise, I like my truck a lot. This is the 1st car in the past 10 years that I will keep owning and driving after 2 years of ownership. All previous cars were in my possession for 8 months on average :))).

So, most likely your only issue will be - Service Center.

I was in 2 different service centers and the situation is the same. Also, you can find the same reports on this forum about service center across the country

Yes, yes you should.

Best vehicle I've ever owned by far

I don’t necessarily think I’d have issues with mobile service visits or random things I had to go in for that didn’t create drivability issues. I have young kids, so my only really big concern is the vehicle breaking down 2 hours from a service center and trying to organize what comes next. Lol.

R1T. 11K miles, almost no significant issues. It's a stretch, but I did have a piece of factory PPF replaced at the SC because there was pollen under it (when delivered from factory). And I just scheduled a mobile service visit for next month to drop off a couple tires (one replacement because it got a nail in it, and one spare for peace-of-mind). Obv not Rivian's fault.

We live in Northern Virginia but are potentially moving to central PA in the future, so have been periodically monitoring the development of service options in that region. As you are aware, it's currently pretty limited. My understanding was this is partially due to outdated PA laws preventing "direct vehicle sales", so Rivian couldn't establish a SC there. Only Tesla is allowed because they were "grandfathered in". ?

In any case, you're doing the right thing by researching and talking to other owners. Personally I would recommend buying one, but only you are going to know your tolerance for service challenges. I do hope that the laws change in the future (you can help with that by contacting your local politicians, and would be doing us a favor when we move there too, haha). Good luck with your decision!

Based on what I've learned in 2 years of being the owner and reading all over the internet, if it bricks it bricks in a few 1st weeks of ownership. After that, I can't call any big issues that brick the car. Also, per my understanding if it is bricked, rivian supplies towing to get the car to the closest SC.

Anyway, considering the amount of time I spent at SC, I still thinking of getting R1S and I also have R2 on pre-order from minute 1.

Had my R1S since Feb-23, love it would buy it again in a minute. I had 1 issue that required a tow but that hasn't happened since they fixed it all in March-23 (12V drained). You will be very happy with it and there are more service center opening so you should be fine.

Love my R1T and will buy another R2 when they come out BUT only because a SC is within 1/2 hour form home, actually 1 mile from work. Now with a local SC I get uber credits and spend 15 minutes dropping off the vehicle and I'm back to regular life. Then for pickup same thing, use uber credits and 15 minute pickup.

If my SC was 2 hours away it would make any service a whole day affair an absolute no go for me. I'd wait until a SC opens closer.

One year, 14k miles on my R1S and 0 tickets.

I really think the biggest factor for your decision is your tolerance for what might happen if you do need service. Owners' service expectations and experiences are all over the place. IMO, if you have zero tolerance and high expectations for the service experience, it is probably not the right vehicle for you to own. If you can accept the fact that Rivian has schedule management issues at some locations and you can "go with the flow" if you do need service, you will love the vehicle.

Replaced a Jeep GC with my R1S in January, 2023. Have almost 17k on it. Have not had any issues preventing me from driving it. Did have a slow leak in the suspension after I got it that caused the left side to sag overnight. That was fixed and vehicle has been great. I would recommend it and have reserved an R2 to replace our aging Tesla Model S.

I was in the same position. Closest service is over 2 hours away, but that is the case for almost any vehicle I was considering. We are in a small town without any car dealers, so the Rivian experience is similar to most other brands. With that said, I knew we're taking a gamble on a new company with a less than average record for reliability. We have had our R1S for about 6 weeks and 1200 miles, and so far no issues. Hopefully it stays that way. I think it comes down to your own risk tolerance.

June 2023 build and no issues that prevent drivability.

Gen 2 will be even more refined with better panels gaps / paint / cosmetics.

I would not hesitate to buy a Gen 1 or Gen 2 as long as it has warranty on it from Rivian.

Just make sure to do a thorough inspection using a delivery checklist before you take possession.

FULL SEND!

I have had my R1S since September of 2023, and other than some small things like a disconnected 12 V adapter under the dashboard and a recall for a potentially loose controller arm, the car has been very solid. It is IMHO a ton of fun to drive, as it gives me all I was looking for; an SUV that wasn't a gas hog, big enough to put people and cargo in, and yet fast with good handling. On those counts, I am very happy.

Good idea to ask questions here, it never hurts. My VIN is in the first 3900 vehicles, I have to believe the onboarding experience has improved since I was onboarded last year. Enjoy!

Hell yes you should!

Personal opinion: save a little $ and get a 24 Gen 1
