The not good situation is putting in to park and certain speeds between 4-2 mph, makes a pretty gnarly click/grind sound. Not good.
I've gotten dyslexic while wanting the windshield washer fluid and pressed the park button a couple times while cruising down the highway. Terrible grinding sound, indeed!

I believe I'm only maybe traveling at 2 mph or so. My 2018 Bolt EV would shift at much higher speeds though (like 10 mph), and if you were in sport and stomped the accelerator it would brick the car.
If you're going that slow I'm surprised you're seeing the warning. I routinely shift around there and have never had an issue. Maybe something else is going on.

I did that once and it didn't do anything bad it just scolded me into not pressing that button.

@Dark-Fx I can get you a larger one before Christmas. Neighbor asked me to find a home or dispose of a full size desk bike with a lightly kitten mauled seat. 40lbs of scrap or a great left leg distraction.

The only time I've seen this is when i have cruise/driver+ active and i need to disengage fast. Then it is a race between my foot hitting the break and my hand hitting the stick.

It then yells at me to slow down before shifting into reverse.

What are you guys even talking about? You mean you're putting it from Reverse to Drive (or whatever) without coming to a complete stop, first?

Nah, my days of doing neutral drops and other crazy stuff are way behind me, LOL. ?
I blew the transmission of my parent's 1990 Plymouth Voyager doing neutral and reverse drops. It was the only way on god's flat green earth that I was going to get that limp 2.4l I4 to spin the tires, so what else was I supposed to do? Good thing that had that extended warranty, since it went out at 74,000 miles. ?

I made good on it, though. When we picked up our R1S, I gave them our 2019 Pacifica Limited with only 23k miles on it as a gift!

I always come to a stop or at least a 1mph role before shifting any vehicle, just how I was always taught.

Years ago when I drove a manual that was slightly different but I would not expect the Rivian to enjoy being shifted while moving, like any other vehicle.

I heard the next update will release bats into the cabin if you do this so be careful

In theory shouldn't drive and reverse just be opposite sides of a continuum of the spin of the motor, one side being clockwise and the other counter. So if you put it in reverse while moving in drive it should just continue to decelerate to brief "stop" only to then begin accelerating in the other direction (assuming you are pressing the accelerator)? Or are the motors only designed to spin one direction and there is a mechanical switch between each motor and drive gear?

They can spin in either direction just fine. If you are going very slow it still flips state and acceleration still happens if the motor is spinning the wrong way from the direction you are commanding.

I don't get that warning as I come to a stop before shifting from one direction to another. I guess that's an old holdout from learning to drive stick on square-cut gears. I have a friend with a Tesla and he loves the fact that he can shift from one direction to another without stopping completely...and it makes me cringe every time he does it in HIS car.

Call me old fashioned, but if you're rolling along a a forward speed and then shift to Reverse without stopping first, that's a lotta unnecessary torque applied to the entire driveline. With enough electronic logs, I'm sure Rivian how many times this is done...when as is shown above it clearly states in the manual to come to a stop first.

We're talking like 2 mph tops. Above that it doesn't make the switch. Warning still presents whether or not it shifts.
