I noticed this somewhat… some still show up, but others are not… almost like the detection is less precise.

Did it ever though? I'm not sure, but I'm paying attention more now because of the stupid speed limit based cruise control mode. I was on a road yesterday that didn't show any speed limit on the display...I passed at least 3 or 4 speed limit signs that were plain as day and the truck never once showed it on the display. Similarly, I was on a 55 mph road and the truck properly showed it. But then the speed limit dropped to 45 mph and the truck didn't detect the sign when it changed. As a result when I went to activate the cruise at 50 mph, the truck immediately tried accelerating to 55 mph since I was going slower than the speed limit it thought was correct...and there's NO way to make it use a cruise limit lower than the speed limit if you have that mode active.

Was it working for folks in the past via camera? Based on how commonly wrong it has been for me, I assumed it was bad mapping data from Mapbox…

It used to be both. I know for a fact it used the camera for detection before, but it feels like it has reverted to only using map data for speed. It never changes at the speed limit sign anymore and there are entire areas (a military installation) that no longer show any speed limit data that used to before.

Is it R1T people are reporting not reading the signs? My R1S still seems to be working, yesterday on my test drive after getting 2023.34 it dropped to 40 from 45 right at the sign. That was the behavior I had before, I can test some more tomorrow to see if it was a coincident or actually did read the sign.

I’ve noticed a few things:

1. Previously many roads would show a speed limit even before I passed a sign - indicating the map data had speed limit data for these roads. Many of these have disappeared with the latest update. Many roads that I know showed speed limit data before passing a sign no longer do. But some still do. (Including a notable one I’ll mention in #3.)

2. The recognition of speed limit signs is a lot slower than before. In prior versions, it would show the new speed limit almost always as I was passing the sign. Now it takes a few seconds/dozen feet.

3. Some signs don’t appear to be noticed at all - when those exact signs were previously. A notable one is near my house there is a road that used to be 45 MPH, but was recently lowered to 35. The first sign with the limit is about 50 after the T-interaction where the road begins. So when I turn onto it, the car shows 45. Before this update, as soon as I passed the new “35” sign, the vehicle would show the new limit. I have driven by it three times on the new update, and it has missed the sign all 3 times.

Really sounds like the new update must just be using the OpenStreetMap data.

I use ABRP on my Kia (no sign detection) and it exhibits the same funky "sometimes perfect, sometimes completely miss" behavior.

Speed limit changes while editing OSM can be precise to the inch. But it depends on how a road is digitally segmented. Sometimes the closest node to a speed limit sign is like 50 feet away, so it'll either change the speed limit a few seconds too early or too late.

Sometimes the speed limit isn't there at all.

Sometimes it's perfect.

It can always be edited to be perfect, but that just requires volunteers (possibly you!) in your area.

I will look for this. But I have previously noticed that some roads I drive on don't show a limit even though I can see a sign and other times It seems to know when no sign is around. I assumed it was map/GPS based. I tried running tests to see if keeping another vehicle between me and the sign caused it to miss the change, but have not been successful in running that test.
