SSD usb-c vs USB

I take delivery of a used 2023 R1t later this week. I'm so excited and looking to get ready for the delivery. So this is also my first post. Can't wait to be a part of the community. I searched for this answer but couldn't find anything. Is there a way to use my old usb SSD /jump drives with a USB to USB c adaptor to record all the gear-guard stuff, or do I need a newer drive? thanks in advance.

They could work, but it depends on how fast they are. If they’re not fast enough, the Rivian won’t let you use it.

Gotta be fast enough, I'd expect slower than USB 3.0 wouldn't work but just plug it in and see. If you already have the drive won't cost ya anything.

I’ve been using a small Samsung USB-C thumb drive since Road Cam became available. Never had issues and it’s only 400mb/s r/w.

A lot of people are using various hard drives, SSD's, etc., along with a short cord and right-angle adapter, with varying success.

Personally I prefer the Samsung flash drives. Have been using this one for the past couple years, no issues:

Just remember that if you have to buy a new drive, to factor the monthly payments for the second loan you'll have to take out into your budget.

I have gotten by with a small USB C thumb drive, but as others have said, the speed of the drive/connector type must meet a certain threshold for Rivian to use it, it will let you know when you try and set it up first time.

Shouldn't have any problem with an SSD. I've been using one since June 2024.

I did have a problem with it after a little while where it pretended to be too slow from a fault in the benchmark. To fix this, take the drive to your computer and open the benchmark.log. Find the words "slow" or "very slow" and change to "READY." Your drive will work fine after that.

No kidding! I've been successfully using a 256GB Samsung stick (with a right-angle adapter) since we got our R1S in August '23. It holds about 16 hours of video which, for me, has been plenty. I thought about upgrading to a 2TB unit and threw one in my Amazon Wish List in February '25. I make a note of the price when I add something to my Wish List, and this one is scary:

Yes. Not a good time to buy memory or SSD. Blame it on AI. Crucial X9 1TB was once $60. Today $147.

I buy tech for a couple different companies. Drives and memory are the worst. But even stuff like this headset used to be $29.99 a few years ago. Look at it now:

It's insane. And yet people will flip their lid if they can't get R2 for $45k.
