For the "semi-active" parts of the suspension to have any effect, there needs to be a significant difference in the load/shock absorbed by the coils. That is, if the coils are doing 90% of the work then the active components can't affect the suspension much. Maybe this whole assembly is a unit, and you can just swap it out and keep the same ride height. Or maybe there are some additional changes as well to reduce manufacturing costs on suspension parts that don't have to be as complex as in the semi-active case. I don't know enough to make that conclusion. But I do know for sure that canceling a reservation right now or not making a reservation right now or buying a different car right now based on the incomplete information we have is a decision that many people will regret down the road. That's what happened with the R1, where it turns out the internet rumors and opinions weren't always true.
Springs are load bearing components supporting the weight of the car. They determine vehicle's height. Shocks control suspension travel. To increase ride height you need taller springs. Rivian labels the Performance/LE R2s (with adjustable shocks) as semi-active because they don't have air suspension to adjust ride height. They're "semi-active" because the shocks are adjustable. I don't expect ride height to differ on any R2s.

My wife and I are getting older and getting in and out of very tall (or very short) vehicles is getting harder. If anybody is at SXSW with a measuring tape, I would be eternally grateful if they could measure the step in height. Thanks in advance.
Physical therapy is always a great option too😁💪

I was told by my local Rivian Space that they will have on sometime in March.
That's a wide number of answers for R2s in showrooms. I've seen a lot of June reports, one July and now March.

One of us is confused. In the walk arounds Ive seen and in the grab bar specific forum, there are no grab bars. Where did this pic come from?
From one of the recent walkthroughs. There’s another video from a while back with RJ where he acknowledges the grab handles.

It’s clearly a different handle as it’s one of the camo test mules.

It's a real offroad vehicle without movable air suspension, so it's going to be higher than ideal but running boards will help. Reservation is cheap, just try it out why test drives are available.

Looks like an R1. The Halo haptic wheels aren't there.
Good catch- you're right. Was going the the SXSW videos shorts on my phone. Explains the different handles.
Anyway - the R2 does have grab handles.

Not sure if you already own a Rivian yet, so if you're aware of what I add below please forgive.

My better half and I are in the same situation. We have had a '22 T for nearly 4 years now and we love it. We have installed aftermarket running boards which have helped immensely. I have not tried entry/exit since Rivian recently updated the "kneel" feature to it's lowest point yet without the running boards, but I doubt it will help enough for my wife who is 5' 1" and not getting younger.

My wife wants the R2 badly. FWIW, given what I've seen online so far, I am fairly confident we will still need running boards. Based on my experience with my T and its RB's, what I'm hoping to find out before we pull the trigger is the following:

Does Rivian intend to offer RB's as an option? Whether or not, the answer is important because in addition to the cost of any RB's is the potential cost of having to remove them before Rivian SC's do any service on them. I've used 3 different SC here in the Seattle area for my T and it's been hit and miss as to whether they ask me to remove before servicing or not. If I don't remove them before, I'll be charged an hourly rate for their removal. I'm not confident Rivian has learned and implemented anything from the R1/running boards experience to overcome this annoying issue on the R2. As much as we love our T, the cost of RB's on a R2 and it's routine maintenance issues is something that we will have to factor in if my better half really wants this vehicle. I don't want to have to remove 2 sets of RB's for 2 Rivians. I'm not getting younger myself.

Seattle area is a pretty major market for Rivian and I expect we will be able to see an R2 fairly soon. I've mentioned to my wife that she should plan on going with me to see it with a tape measure. I'll check back on this thread to see if anyone else has an actual tape measurement for "step in" height. I'll update this reply if and when we get any additional helpful info.

Not a current Rivian owner, so thanks for the info. I hadnt considered the pain/cost of removing/reinstalling the running boards everytime I get it serviced. Ugh! That may be enough to make me not want them.
My wife and I can get in/out of my Jeep Renegade pretty well. If the floor of thd R2 isnt too much higher, we should be fine. Im also trying other sources to get the stepin height on this vehicle. Maybe between us, we can dig up the info soon. Thanks for your help.
