Greetings all. Need the expertise of the folks on this forum. The bottom screw hole for the front mud flaps is stripped out on the passenger side. It was like this before I install it.

What is the easiest way to repair something like this?

I thought about filling with epoxy or trying a screw one size larger. I actually lost the screw now while driving down the road ?

Get a slightly larger self tapping screw?

I would go with the larger screw also. Take one of the other screws out for comparison. Buy a couple of the larger screws while you're at it. I would go with stainless steel screws.

I guess Lowe's would be a good place to start for larger screw? I had some clips here but the hole is too small for those.

Either Lowes or a good local hardware store that has a large individual fastener selection.

Re tap it. Find the size, buy a tap and just thread it in. So long as it isnt rounded out too you should be able to tap it. I've restored some pretty gnarly threads before doing that.

Yep retapping the hole to clean up the damaged threads is the way to go. If for some reason that does not work then a helicoil kit that you can get at auto parts allows you to drill out the damaged threads with a supplied slightly larger drill bit and use the new larger tap and insert the supplied SS threaded insert. But tapping the stripped hole usually works. Good luck

Another approach that works for me is taking some small-gauge stranded wire, say 22GA, wrap it around the screw and then screw that assembly into the hole. If you have the wire on hand it’s a $0 fix you can try.

Now I’m curious, the way I read this was it was a sheet metal screw in a body panel, nothing to tap. Did I miss read it? If so my suggestion above can be ignored.

Doesn’t the fender liner screw need a fender liner screw retainer.

Something like this:

Not sure...I can't see anything externally. I didn't try to remove the fender liner. I noticed when I installed the mud flaps that it was stripped but it seemed to hold...just wouldn't tighten. Now I just washed it yesterday and the screw is gone now. I would think it would have to have something like that since it's a screw as opposed to a push clip.

I might check with service to see if they would sell me a screw and clip for my me to fix myself.

I've used heli coils in the past to repair stripped holes in my bike (motorcycle) with good success as it allows you to maintain the same screw size.

I had two missing and that’s what they sent me. Some screws and retainers.

Yes, retapping would only be for a machine screw. Most likely this application has a self-tappong sheet metal screw.
