The powered tailgate was far more complex than just an open/close tailgate. Theirs had the ability to go from 0-90 degrees, to 180 degrees to better facilitate rear access.

The cables that hold a tailgate at 90 degrees, would also decouple, to allow it to swing the full 180. Watch the video below.

Yeah the 180 thing would justify the Rivian's being powered. That's a useful feature because now that they got rid of it loading the bed is a pain in the ass sometimes because the tailgate sticks so far out. It's hard to load it in instances where you don't need the extra bed length which for me is most of them.

Like today for me......softner salt....pain to load over that long distance.

Somehow my basic Tacoma tailgate topic really got things heated up. Life is like a box of chocolates.....you never know what you are going to get!

Like today for me......softner salt....pain to load over that long distance.
Yeah big heavy bags are a pain with the tailgate like that. My tool boxes too.

The dual action Ridgeline tailgate is actually extremely useful. It swings down like a normal tailgate and also out like a door. That allows you to reach all the way into the bed. No power needed.
